  • Chuckle, was just telling the wife how cool it would be to live to see thee 300th anniversary of this coin being minted. I told her I would take her to Mexico City on a Vacation. She got all excited and asked how much the coin was worth. I just sighed and walked back to my study thinking about the intrinsic value of the piece, not the monetary...

Cool piece of history, what do the legends mean?

Well I think FRD VI means (Ferdinand VI the king os spain at the time), The M with the little o over it means it was minted in Mexico City, Of course the R2 means 2 Reales. The rest is mainly Heraldty (sp) and of the date.

"Utraque unum" means "from both, one", a reference to the Old and New Worlds (as a Spanish colony).

"Frd VI D G Hisp Et Ind R" means "Ferdinand VI, by the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies" ("Indies" being a reference to the New World).

At least, I think it's "Indies". My Latin is a bit rusty.image

I don't understand the connection. Do pillars have some special significance in Masonic tradition or symbolism?

You could say that. Yes, you could say both tradition and symbolism. There are two Giant Pillars in every lodge...
