I think it was Scott Wren who researched these mules and published a theorum on them.
At the time these were made there was some serious industrial unrest in the Royal Mint and as a form of protest these mules were deliberatly made in order to highlight some sort of short coming by the Mint. Seems quite a few made it into circulation before anyone noticed, the upper ceiling of numbers made is around 300,000 odd from memory, with the RBA of NZ only discovering these after the majority were put into circulation.
Yeah, I have a cat. They say it's good to have pets around you.
Seriously, that's a nice coin. Most mules are hard to afford, but that one is available even for poor people like me. Seems it has an interesting story as well.
I have sold about 30 of them over the past few years. It is listed in Krause as New Zealand KM-33 with an estimated mintage of 50,000. I kept one for my collection which was graded MS-65 by ANACS
Very cool. I wonder if NGC would slab all three of the coins in a multislab. You know get a Bahama 5 cent and a New zealand 2 cent from 1967 and have them slabbed with the mule. That would be very cool.
