Notgeld Notes - Anybody know about these?

Hi,
I picked up these Notgeld Notes in my local coin shop today. I picked them up because they were so interesting looking. Anybody know anything about these? Thanks, in advance, for any replies and thanks for looking. image

p.s. I posted this first in the currency forum and it was suggested I ask here (even though this is a coin forum).

  • Gruenberg and Oberammergau are both German and reasonably common (<$25) according to 'World Notgeld 1914-47' by Coffing.

  • Nice notes! I have a few notgeld notes myself. Most issues, especially those dated 1922 and 1923 are fairly common but occasionally there is a rare one. I have not seen the ones you show here before... but then someone once told me that a complete colletion of German notgeld including all varieties would be around 150,000 different notes image In other words, there are always some that you haven't seen!

These are interesting little notes each of which commemerates a significant event of local history/legend. Both are German altho a large series is also known from Austria.

The Gruenberg is part of a set of 5 (25 pf, 50 pf, 75 pf, 1 mk, 1.50 mk) and seems to feature witchburning during 1663-5. The Oberammergau note is part of a set of 3 (25pf, 50 pf and 75 pf) and seems to commemerate a plague during 1634.

A yahoo search would probably help you tie down the significance of the historical event in each case.

According to Manfred Mehl's Deutsche Serienscheine von 1918-1922 (1998) the value of the first is 2 DM, the second 1 DM. Since you have a single note from each set, I'd guess this mean retail is probably no more than $1.

Not real valuable, but very pretty, historically interesting and a great starting point for many young collectors.

Ever been to the 'Passion Play' at Oberammergau? I don't remember much of it as we got pretty well snockered on Hoochiens (sp), Coke and Ausbach Brandy with one ice cube. They ran out of Ice at the hotel bar I was stying at, LOL.

Askari collects them and would be a forum expert on them, so to speak. But, I noticed on his profile that he hasn't visited since April 12. image

Thanks for the replies everyone. The dealer I got these from had a whole shoebox full of them that someone brought in and sold him. I thought they were neat looking so I picked out these 2 and asked him how much he wanted for them. He quoted me $4 each so I said I'd take them. He had 100's of different ones in there. Some looked like the ones I got, others were huge and reminded me of old Educational notes and others had an art deco look with artwork reminiscent of a cross between greek sculptures and something out of the movie Metropolis. It was hard to resist the temptation to buy more of them just for the artwork.

I collect Notgeld but I specifically look for the silk and linen notes

Those (and US Fractional notes) are probably the two things that could get me into paper money.
