PINKSTON DONE FOR THE YEAR
August 5, 2005
By BOB KENT
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Wide receiver Todd Pinkston will miss the entire season after rupturing his Achilles tendon on a routine play during Friday morning's practice. The injury, coupled with Terrell Owens' groin injury, leaves Donovan McNabb without his two starting receivers.
Owens is day-to-day, but Pinkston will undergo season-ending surgery. The general recovery time, according to head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder, is six months.
Meanwhile, Correll Buckhalter, who limped off the practice field Friday morning, has a bruise on his surgically-repaired right knee, just below the knee on the high shin. Buckhalter could, however, be back on the field as early as Saturday if the swelling goes down.
So for now, the Eagles are without both starting receivers and both running backs -- Brian Westbrook remains a holdout.
But the news of the day is Pinkston.
"Obviously, we feel bad from a team standpoint for Todd," said head coach Andy Reid. "He worked very hard this offseason and was having a heck of a camp. It's a shame this happened."
Pinkston got tangled with cornerback Matt Ware while going for a pass down the left sideline during the team's live period. Pinkston got up briefly, but then laid down and awaited medical attention.
Greg Lewis replaced him in the lineup during the afternoon practice and will continue do so, Reid said. Meanwhile, second-round pick Reggie Brown took most of the No. 3 receiver reps Friday afternoon but the head coach noted that "there's some competition for that spot" with Billy McMullen.
Reid expressed confidence in Lewis, who posted 25 receptions in 2004 after making just six catches during his rookie year. Lewis also earned a five-year contract extension last season.
"We have a lot of confidence in Greg Lewis that was developed over last season," said Reid of the former rookie free agent from Illinois. "We've all seen what he can do and we know he'll step up and do a heck of a job."
Reid said he doesn't see a need to go outside the team for help at the position, saying simply: "we're fine."
"It's tough anytime any of your guys go down," McNabb said. "We've had one receiver go down yesterday and Todd got hurt today. That's something that we definitely don't need on the offensive side or as a team."
This is the first major injury of Pinkston's pro career. He has played in 78 games during his five-year career, starting 62 of them. In 2004, his 18.8-yard average led all NFC receivers.
Pinkston's absence means opportunities for David Culley's young receiving corps. Reggie Brown's reps will surely increase. It also a big opportunity for third-year receiver Billy McMullen, who has looked sharp at times during camp. Justin Jenkins, Robert Redd, Isaac West and others are also in the mix as well.
"Injuries have played a major part in the way teams have went on that next season after that Super Bowl run," McNabb said. "You need all your guys healthy to continue this thing on."
Maybe if he held a rattle, he'd get his own reality series!
Lewis was a big play guy at Illinois. He and Brandon Lloyd both made big plays when the ball actually made it near them

Sounds great to me. The Eagles are going to really need him because just a feeling that Reggie Brown isn't close to being ready yet - almost impossible for a rookie to successfully start in the West Coast offense because of the complexity of it. Eagles traditionally in situations like this have signed a veteran who still has a little gas left in the tank. I'll have to start looking at the possibilities. Probably won't happen until anout the 2nd or 3rd preseason game.
Here is a big statement - Reggie Brown will be the ROY. Owens will help him and Brown will emerge as the dark horse.
even me noticed. Maybe Philly can pick up Joe J and Keenan!! Then they could trade TO for a real QB and maybe win 7 games
this year...probably not. Reid enjoys the complimentary jelly dounts the loser always gets come Monday morning.

TO in camp but unhappy, their #2 receiver out for the year; McNabb not gelling with TO (McNabb is quoted as saying "We had one wide receiver go down yesterday and Todd today"...way to fan the flames that there's a dispute), and their starting RB is holding out, seemingly lots of dissention in Eagleville.
They'll make the playoffs because the NFC is so weak...but is anyone else seeing the wheels falling off in Philly?
