Thurman Munson - Aug 2, 1979

One of the great enjoyments of collecting vintage baseball cards is rediscovering the history of the game and the men who made it.

Yesterday, Aug 2, 2005 was the 26th anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson. Strangely, I didn't know anything about his demise. I knew that he was dead, but didn't know the whole story until I needed his card to complete my '77 set and out of curiosity searched the internet.

I found this story, and it's a great read.

  • Thanks for the link.
  • A little bit of remberance on this. The game the next day at Yankee Stadium was played because Munson's wife said he would want them to play. After the 60 seconds of silence for Munson the crowd started applauding and continued to do so for about 15 minutes. They stood and cheered in memory of the man. CBS Sunday morning showed the entire tribute on air without commentator interruption. It had to be one of the most touching things I have ever seen in my life. Now this was 28 years ago and if I have it wrong someone please correct me.

  • As some of you know, Thurm was and is my hero. I loved that guy as a boy, the way he played and what he meant to the Yankees. As I was reading this post, I opened up my mail and realized that while I was away on a business trip, my PSA 9 75 Thurm arrived on Aug 2nd. Ironic.

There will never be another NYY 15 - I am at least glad that Jeter is a worthy captain.

Thanks for the memories and the 8/2 post.

    Thanks Thurman (edit: & coffey)!

For being an A+ catcher and Yankee slugger! Rest in Peace! (Re: Even though you looked more like a farmer than a baseball player, you were great!)

    IN FACT, I PICKED-UP A NICE PSA 9 "MUNSTER"
