Superstar centre Peter Forsberg signs two-year deal with Flyers
PHILADELPHIA (CP) - Free-agent forward Peter Forsberg, the NHL's scoring champion and most valuable player in 2002-2003 with Colorado, has signed with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Flyers originally drafted Forsberg in 1991 but dealt him in the Eric Lindros trade to Quebec in 1992. "He was an original Flyer," Flyers head coach Ken Hitchcok told The Canadian Press from Kamloops, B.C. "I was in the room in Quebec City when we traded him, I'll never forget it."
Reports say the deal was worth $10.7 million US over two years.
To make room for Forsberg's salary under the cap, the Flyers traded centre Jeremy Roenick to the Los Angeles Kings. Roenick is slated to earn $4.94 million this season.
Forsberg, 32, helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 1996 and in 2001.
Injuries limited the rough-tumble Swede to 39 games in 2003-2004.
The signing capped an active few days for GM Bob Clarke, who earlier in the week signed defencemen Derian Hatcher, Mike Rathje and Chris Therien.
