have shipping costs gone cuckoo, or did I just notice?

DSL 8 bucks for 3 or more cards, Louisbollman 7 bucks for a card, Just won a card for 19.99 and shipping is 3 bucks now auction helper says insurance is another 2.25, and I won a 100$ card shipping was 3 bucks and seller says insurance is another 3.5!!!! So is 6 bucks a card the average now!!!

I think the most I have paid is $5 for shipping. Anything over that I think is too much IMO. I think insurance should be optional, but I think some include it in their shipping price, like 4SC. I think they are like $3.50 includes insurance, but they have a company they use for the insurance part of it.

DSL does max out at the $8 no matter how many cards you order, so I just wait until I build up several - and send them a check. Never a problem. But I do agree, some sellers are getting out of hand with this practice as of late.

Don't forget the rising trend that has been discussed in several previous threads.

A lot of sellers are no longer just charging you for the shipping/handling of the actual package they mail you--now they are also choosing to include all their fees associated with the entire auction into the "handling" price--such as eBay listing fees, final sale fees, paypal fees, and some even add extra to cover gas for their car, time spent at the post office during lunch, etc. I'm not saying the sellers you mentioned by name do all this--but I have noticed quite a few sellers who gouge us on the shipping/handling fees.

As for me, I never complain as long as the shipping/handling fees are clearly listed in the auction--I just adjust my bid accordingly. The higher the shipping/handling fee--the lower I bid.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

    WTF is "Final Sales Fee"?

Oh, you still have to pay a fee, besides the listing fee. Thanks Wufdude
  • I guess he's referring to the fee that Ebay charges based on the final value of the item. It's spelled out on their site but I'm too lazy to go look now. I believe it's around 5.25% up to $20, then a little less for dollar amount oveer $20, etc.

I charge $2.00 for shipping a card which generally allows me to also recoup most fees without gouging someone. Postage is usually 0.49 or 0.60 and bubble mailer 0.15 which leaves some to cover misc. fees. Pretty fair I'd think.

I've noticed shipping prices creeping up on some of my purchases as well. One of more recent purchases was a graded Ozzie Smith card I won for .50 and shipping was $4.50. It is a little crazy. I try to keep the shiping prices low, because I am a collector as well and get turned off by seller's who gouge you on shipping. I usually charge $2.50 and max it out at $5.50. Last week I lost money on quite a few packages because people were winning 20 or more cards at a time. It's ok though because maybe I got more bids in return for basically free shipping on a lot of the cards. At least I tell myself that! I'll probably lose more money on shipping this week because last weeks stuff went so well I listed another couple hundred cards. I'd rather save time though and package a bunch of stuff together than turn people off to high shipping costs. Even the largest packages only cost a few dollars more than I charged, so I may have came out better anyway in the end.

probably why i take a loss on shipping.my max is $4.00 which is priority with confirmation(usps boxes, mostly psa stuff),anything over $200.00 is shipped postpaid including insurance.i was once a buyer and hated overcharged shipping fees.shipping is expensive but should not be a money maker.look for my ads on ebay under rtg74. thanks

As a high volume seller, I can tell you that the fees and costs from Ebay/Paypal are the biggest reason I raised my rates. Before I would only use Delivery Confirmation for high dollar shipments, however being burned a few times by scammers playing the "I didn't receive it" game with Paypal forced me to use it for all shipments. It is really bad for international customers because tracking costs are very expensive.
