The controversy over Vatican gold

During my recent trip to Rome I purchased the sought-after 2002 20 and 50 euro 1st year proofset of JPII. I heard that the Vatican might have used gold from victims of the Holocaust. Does anyone know about this issue? Also, are these coins worthy long-term investments? Only 2800 were minted. I also have the 2003 set that I will give as gifts to family.

Thanks,

  • You should honestly think coins strictly as a hobby and not as an investment option. Sure you can, but prices are too voliatle. As for the gold... I mean this is a ridicious question. You have no signs of telling if it is indeed gold from the victims of the Holocaust. It may be abosulte zero % or oops, someone accidently added one gram of such gold, or it could be 100% but there is no such tellsign! Metals are recycleable so you will never know if gold was obtained by illegal means or whatsoever. image

  • There have been a lot of bad things said about Pius XII and World War II but I don't recall anything about the Church, as a whole, gaining financially.

It seems hard to believe that anyone could tell whether coins minted in 2002 contain gold stolen from Holocaust victims 60 years previously.
