Report: Palmeiro tested positive for stanozolol
"NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro's positive steroid test was for stanozolol, a powerful anabolic steroid that is not available in dietary supplements, according to a newspaper report.
The New York Times, citing a person in baseball with direct knowledge of the sport's drug-testing program, reported on its Web site Tuesday that Palmeiro tested positive for the drug known by the brand name Winstrol, most notably linked to the Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson of Canada.
The person who said that Palmeiro tested positive for stanozolol did not want to be identified because the testing policy prohibits anyone in baseball from disclosing information about test results without authorization, the Times said. "

He should just fess up and say how long he's been doing roids...I suspect it's been the better part of a decade. And anyone who's ever tests positive for steroids should be immediately barred from EVER entering the Hall. It's cheating more than anything Pete Rose ever did.
I am a bit leary about athletes claiming a positive steroid test came because of supplements. There has been enough time for the player's association to test the most common supplements to see if they can trigger a positive test.
Stanozolol is a steroid---there is no supplement that has it as an ingredient. It is not in our food supply either. Perhaps he can say that a trainer would inject him with supplements... Raffy did not want to know the contents so he can say he never knowingly took steroids.
He is running out of excuses. This looks really bad. I guess McGwire was the smartest of the bunch at the congressional hearing. Raffy seemed like a nice guy, but I don't know him personally or anything....We don't know people until we know them. No tear will shed from my eye....this does not look good for Raffy's legacy.
It makes the numbers that Andre Dawson, Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly put up even better now. It could be that Sosa could be exposed soon, Bonds is already on shaky ground, McGwire too. Should we be upset if these guys turn up to be juicers? It's disappointing, but we can get over it. There are plenty of real stars in MLB.
It is upsetting that all these steroid users squeezed out the line drive hitters like Gregg Jefferies. He was an amazing hitter with speed, yet retired early because he felt he could not keep up with the power hitters of the current era. Sad to see real talent go like that. He was a multidimensional player. He had some power, shot line drives, played many positions, got on base, runs... Let us keep exposing these steroid users, too bad if too many stars get dinged....
Now I know why the Olympics kicked out baseball for 2012. It was the steroid policy and also the fact pros could not be yanked from MLB rosters to form a national team. I don't mind watching young athletes, so having pros is not a must eszpecially with the MLB summer schedule, but no one wants to see steroid users.

Gregg Jefferies had a nice major league career an retired in 2000 with the Detroit Tigers after appearing in only 111 over his final two seasons. He had a longer than average 14 year major league career. He was an average to just above average player who finished his career with a .289 batting average. In 1993 with the St Louis Cardinals he stole 46 bases but never reached 30 in any other year in his career. He was severely overhyped as a rookie and had no shot of living up to it.
Greg Jefferies retired because he lost his skills, not because he thought he couldn't keep up with the days power numbers. Why make it sound like he was a victim of juicers? I don't get it!

If you want to be tough rules this is way to weak of a punishment. The only thing that would be tough would be a two year ban from baseball, second offense bringing a lifetime ban. The "Hall" just doesn't mean that much in the real world.
He has also ruined any chance of a lasting legacy.

<< <i>I was watching SportsCenter last night & saw where they polled 100 current HOFers - before the positive test, 84 answered yes to Raffy going to the Hall; after the positive test only 16 answered yes. That's a scary drop.

Sure, they are all affected by availability and confirmation bias. All of the negativity affects their decision making. That is why there is a 5 year waiting period on a player before entering the HOF. Most of the negative events peak and then the effects are subdued over time. Think of Billy Boy Clinton and his scandal. Oops, let me say scandals. However, it is a scary drop for Palmeiro.

"One other thing I just remembered from my research. Winstrol was at one time (and may still be) a steroid that is only supposed to be used in horses. It became popular in the bodybuilding arena when Congress outlawed steroids.
Raffy is a jackass for using it (Very potent and has side effects)
Congress is filled with A**holes who don't know any better. By outlawing steroids, users turn to the black market and starting using equestrian steroids. Just too funny. The same system that it implemented to try to protect its citizens is the same system that makes steroid use more potentially harmful. Kind of like Prohibition.......um, let's not go there."

Not to turn this into a political debate but is anyone else a little bothered by George Bush saying he believes Palmiero a couple of days ago but called for tougher drug testing in his state of the union address a year or two ago. Stick to your guns George, even if your friend gets busted.

I'm a little unclear about what conclusion you are asking us to draw from this statement. Is it that steroids should not be outlawed because users will turn to something more harmful?

Somewhat. I am stating that steroids should be legalized and only administered to consenting adults by an authorized doctor. This would cut down greatly on the black market and other health risks.
Really, it is much better than alcohol, tobacco, plastic surgey, and growth hormone, which claims infinite more lives than steroids per year.

This only affects those who would otherwise be considered for the Hall, and the players these days are playing and juicing for paychecks--not entry to the Hall. They'd only care about the Hall if you got paid a million bucks upon admission.

I thought steroids were still legal if a doctor prescribes them. I mean, cocaine, morphine and opium are legal when used in hospitals....which are otherwise illegal on the streets.
Steroids have been villified for far too long. I mean, I am all for athletes following the rules. If steroids are banned in a sport, then they are banned. However, I think steroids do have a role in rehab and preventive medicine. Steroids may help patients with muscle atrophy caused by prolonged inactivity due to other ailments. Sure steroids have side effects, but what doesn't in terms of prescription drugs? Even Tylenol has side effects if taken too long, like liver damage.
Steroids have been so villified, that even doctors may be reluctant to prescribe them for people who need it because of the negative climate. Steroids should be banned as a performance enhancer, but it may serve to help a person when recovering from multiple bone fractures, for instance, where he was in a cast too long and the muscles atrophied. He can use small doses of steroids and an exercise regime to help the recovery.
