The Cards have been struggling of late, but it's nice to have that shut down pitcher who you know is going to go out there and more then likely win the game. Clemens, Pedro, Oswalt have been phenomal this year, but I don't think anyone has been better then Carpenter.

Hey, how about Abraham Nunez. This guy can really play. He has filled in great for Rolen. He is hitting, and is playing some great defense.
Cardsfan,
Did you see that play last night at the plate (the messed up squeeze)? I just don't think the right call was made. Carpenter was actually trying to get out of the way, and he was called out for interference.

lets say mets put cameron out there you guys claim him. then you have to make a trade that mets agree on? or once claimed mets have to accept offer for putting him out there.
this is just hypothetical so dont jump on me saying you wouldnt want cameron etc..
And I thought that was bunk call on the botched squeeze last night too. Carp didn't seem to be interfering to me. LoDuca just seemed to flail and fall. Oh well, a win is a win.
<< <i>waiver wire deal? how does it work? >>
It works just like a normal trade except the player has to pass through waivers. I'm not an expert on the subject but as far as I know normally teams will not waiver a guy on these types of trades from fear of retribution. For example last year Larry Walker was a post trade line deal. After the deal is announced he's on waivers and if any team chooses to waiver him the deal can be voided, but teams know if they do that then Cards would likely do it back to them in the future. I believe there was a trade last year that didn't work out because the player got claimed but I don't remember who it was.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That is how it works. The Edmonds catch was great, and the Eckstein one was pretty good too. I didn't think we had much of a chance falling down early to Beckett, but it was a great comeback.
I read something lately about now with some of the younger and more aggressive owners, they are blocking some of these waiver wire deals. I don't know how the process works completely, but I do know that other teams can make a play at a guy on waivers and mess the deal up.

<< <i>If Clemens can get 15 or more wins and maintains an ERA under 1.50, that would be hard to ignore for the Cy Young. >>
I Agreed, it will be a tough call. Carpenter also has the complete games. Clemens would have at least a couple more wins if he hadn't handed it over to the bullpen. If they both keep pitching at the level that they have been it will be an interesting vote. Clemens won last year in a big part due to him having more wins then Randy Johnson, who had better numbers.
<< <i>I'd like to see him stay but who are you going to replace? >>
I'll nominate Jason Marquis.

They said something on ESPN last night about it being the largest 9th inning comeback in several years for the Cardinals. Help me remember - didn't they score like 7 runs with 2 outs in the 9th against the Reds earlier this year with Danny Graves pitching - therefore leading to his release from the Reds?

You are correct. I heard ESPN say the same thing and didn't remember the Cincy game - another game I stupidly quit watching!
Cards/Reds comeback game
Clemens is projected to go 14-7. Carpenter is projected to go 23-5. Now IF Carpenter's ERA was something like over 3.50 or something like that, I could see Clemens getting the Cy Young over Carpenter. But Carpenter's ERA is 2.29! Let me repeat that - 2.29! With all of the other numbers, it would be a shame if Carpenter didn't win the Cy Young award.

I think so many people are looking at Clemens because he's a major star having an incredible year and couple that with him being 50 years old makes for a good story.
If he was closer in wins, say 16 to Carps 19, I think the discussion would be worth having. As it is now, I don't see Carpenter as having much trouble winning it. Dontrelle will get some votes, but he has way fewer K's, and his ERA is higher (though still very, very good).

<< <i>Carp is now 19 - 4! He pitched well again last night. He could have went the distance. Someone please tell me something - why are people looking at Clemens' ERA like it is the only thing that matters. Granted, Clemens has been lights out this year. But, (correct me if I'm wrong), Clemens doesn't finish games like Carpenter does. Carpenter is - First in wins. Second in ERA. Third in strikouts. Fourth in opponents batting average. First in complete games. Second in shutouts.

If Carp goes 22-5 or 23-5 he will win the Cy Young. These days, it is so hard just to get to 20 wins, so 22 or 23 would be extraordinary.
<< <i>I wonder what's been wrong with Pujols the past week? He is definitely slumping. I thought he would get hot toward the end of the season. Right now, he is below .330 for the first time a long time. He has a shot at the batting title if he would just get hot. >>
Not to rain on the Cards' parade (and I DO want them to win the Series) but I noticed something interesting as I was looking over their team stats: as great as they are, Pujols is the only one hitting at least .300 . I know they more than make up for it in terms of run production (and yes, several of them are hitting in the .290s) and pitching but do winning teams historically have only one .300 hitter in the lineup?
<< <i> His last 3 starts have been bad - terrible tonight! >>
Didn't see the game but I'm surprised they left him that long to take that kind of beating. I hope he's not getting a tired arm.
<< <i> and pitching but do winning teams historically have only one .300 hitter in the lineup? >>
Interesting question. I went back over the last ten world series winners and it looks like 7 of them had only 2 .300 hitters that were starters, while Diamondbacks only had 1. The 97 Marlins did not have any .300 hitting starters. In fact they only had one position player over .300 with more then 10 ab's and that was Gregg Zaunn at .301 in 143 ab's. So yes it can be done.
<< <i>That's because batting average in and of itself is a very poor method of player evaluation. >>
Are you of the Michael Lewis school that rates on-base percentage as one of the better ways to evaluate a player?
What was once Carps' Cy Young award now has become a toss up, and it's up in the air....going to be very interesting to see how it plays out.
<< <i> It could very well be in the mind of the Cards' players if they play the stros first round... >>
Oops meant the NLDS since you can't play division opponents in the first round, it's a good thing too I'd rather not go against Clemens, Pettitte, and Oswalt in a short series.
<< <i>What was once Carps' Cy Young award now has become a toss up, and it's up in the air....going to be very interesting to see how it plays out. >>
true, Dontrelle probably could have jumped in the drivers seat but he got lit up the last time out too.
Yes, I collect shiny modern crap

<< <i>Another bad outing for Carps tonight. I'm starting to get more then a little worried. Two straight losses to the Stros who we could very well see in the NLCS. Anyone else worried? >>
I told people my conspiracy theory prior to this series. The Cards would much rather play SD than the Philis in the first round. That plan (if true) could have just backfired on Tony. We had lost 10 in a row dating back to last year's NLCS. Prior to Tuesday, our confidence was shot..
Not anymore
<< <i>When Willy Taveras reached on an infield single to start the ninth inning of a tie game Wednesday, he told St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols of his intentions.
"I told him if the ball's hit in the gap or the corner, I was going to score," the Astros' center fielder said. >>
<< <i>I told people my conspiracy theory prior to this series. >>
I seriously doubt they are trying to throw it especially when they want to win for Carpenter and wanted to reach 100 wins. I think the Cards would probably rather not see the Stros in the playoffs.
<< <i>Looks like it'll be the Padres and Cards in Round 1... I WANT to say the Pads have a shot, but... >>
I'd say they definitely have a shot, short series can turn quickly and the Pads came into to St.Louis and dominated us earlier in the year.
<< <i>I seriously doubt they are trying to throw it especially when they want to win for Carpenter and wanted to reach 100 wins. I think the Cards would probably rather not see the Stros in the playoffs. >>
Do you really think 100 wins really matters to Tony? They had the best record in the majors last year only to get swept by the Sox. All he cares about are match-ups.
If you were a manager, who would you rather face?
A .500 Padres or a red hot Philadelphia team?
<< <i>If you were a manager, who would you rather face? >>
The Phils are hot but so are the Stros and in the postseason I would rather not face the team with the dominant pitching staff. The first round is just one step to the series and you have to think about the whole picture. The Astros took us to game 7 last year, so if they can be avoided it would be preferrable. Before the Marlins fell apart I feared having to face them in the first round since they've never lost a postseason series.

Wow.... Guess when you have a loaded team like the Cards, you don't need to take it one series at a time.
Tell Tony I said congratulations on making the NLCS
<< <i>Fear the Braves. >>
Trust me, I do. Prior to last year, they OWNED us in the post-season.
