Mastro 1979 OPC PSA 10 Gretzky Rookie

I am an avid hockey collector and wish I could win power ball this week so I could attempt to bid on this card. Where do you think this card belongs in the history of greatest Rookies??? Read the Mastro description, I am interested to hear what non hockey people hve to say.

Cheers,

Before people jump on about how the card has print dots, is badly rough cut and less than sharp corners, keep in mind you can't tell anything from a scan. Many scanners give the card the appearance of a rough cut and rounded corners. The print dots can be explained by bad lighting.

The expert graders at PSA said this is a PSA 10 and that's the end of it. For the naysayers, just watch what this bad boy brings when the hammer falls!! imageimageimage

  • Also the rough cut is a good sign that it is actually authentic and not sheet cut.
  • The centering is a turn off to me. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a modern rookie, it needs to be 50/50.

    The rough cut looks nice.

Even if money were no object, I think I'd save myself $25,000 and hold out for a 9 with superior eye appeal. I'd be willing to be that at least 25 percent of the PSA 9's out there look better than this card, which, I believe, was graded very shortly after BGS awarded a 9.5 on an OPC Gretzky rookie. Kinda strange timing, if you ask me.

I do think the rough cut adds an element of legitimacy to OPC cards in this age of sheet-cut uncertainty, but I think 10's should only show a slight hint of the O-Pee-Chee cut. Plus the centering isn't that hot for a 10. (Of course, I think the 10 grade is something of a fiction anyway.) But, for me, the real kicker is my belief that PSA's awarding of this 10 was at least somewhat influenced by the fact that they were beaten to the PR punch by BGS/BVG on a gem mint Gretzky.

You can blow it up to about a zillion magnification and see Wayne's nosehairs. What's wrong with the scan?

  • So how many examples of this card exist? 1000, 10,000, 100,000? Oh, but a pair of eyeballs says it's a 10, therefore the pricetag. If those subjective eyes graded it a 9, how much less would this card command?

I 'think' a PSA 9 sells for around five grand.

  • BVG 9 Gretzky

This card looks better than that 10 but i how much do you want to bet this is sheet cut? An OPC with not even a hint of a rough cut? Yeah right.

I paid $6k for this about 4 years ago on ebay, though the price on 9's has fallen over the past 2 years :

An while I don't mind the rough cut, I can't see paying 5-10 times that amount just for that number '10' printed on the label :

    Ray,

Nice to see a large scan of your Gretzky 9. It's a beauty!

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Gorgeous card ray... Gretzky's OPC RC in a PSA 9 is next on my radar...

Ray's 9 is the best example I've ever seen. It blows away that crappy 10, and the 2 PSA 9 from Superior.
  • Thanks for the link ray, as I am aware of that particular auction and the cards offerred.

To wit, EagleEye is right... in fact, the 10 on mastro appears to have a slightly "blunted" top-right corner... I would much rather own ray's 9 than that 10 any day. Just a gorgeous example.
  • I don't think the centering is as bad on that 10 as the scan would have us believe. Any time you see a card pushed up against the inner edge, as that card is on it's left edge, it makes the centering look worse than it is.

I'm surprised that Mastro would provide such a crappy scan for such an important item.
  • Ray, nice 9! I think it has more appeal than the 10 myself.
Eddie Murray, Will Clark and Darin Erstad collector, check my wantlists for what I need.

  • My guess is that the Mastro wanted everyone to see the rough cut on the Gretzky so that all sheet cut dislikers would say oh it must be a non sheet card.
love to buy sell or trade graded hockey stars only, please to meet you and happy collecting
