I'm planning to attempt to cross this beautiful 1948 Leaf #76 Ted Williams I recently bought into PSA 8. What do you guys think it would garner from PSA? I am probably going to request min grade 8NQ. I've linked to scans.
That card definitely has a chance. But, you'll have to do two things.
1) Crack it. Yes, it's scary. But it's the only way this will ever get into a PSA 8 slab. There is NO WAY PSA is going to slab a BVG 8 into a PSA 8 holder.
2) Be prepared for multiple submissions. Your problem with this card is the toning. What you'll need is to catch a grader in a good mood. It's a tweener, which means it will eventually get slabbed PSA 8, but you have to be ready to send it in 10-15 times if that's what it takes.
The biggest setback most guys experience in crossovers is sending it in once, then saying 'well, I guess it didn't make the cut'. If you're not prepared to fork out upwards of $300 in submission fees and having your money tied up for 4 months or so then you're better off selling it as is.
Wow. That's a tough call. I think I am going to send it as a crossover since I have five other cards (four GAI's of 1948 Leaf and '52 Topps and a '64 Topps graded by BVG) to cross and want to use my 6 free subs, plus I'm just too afraid to crack them all at this point. You really think PSA wouldn't cross a BVG 8 to PSA 8 ever?
"You really think PSA wouldn't cross a BVG 8 to PSA 8 ever?"
I think it 'could' happen, but I don't see it happening with this Williams because of the toning.
BVG gives breaks to older cards if they consider the flaws to have been part of the manufacturing and distributing process at the time. In other words, the older the card the more lenient they are with their standards. This toning is an example of that.
Still, best of luck! I hope it crosses for you. Either way, let us know.
"I wouldnt crack it either. You have resale to think about if you keep it in the BVG holder."
This is simply a question of quantifying the risk vs. the reward. If the card will sell for twice as much in a PSA holder than a BVG holde than it only has to cross 50 percent of the time. And actually less than that, since it's still worth something raw.
One other thing: If you have any more of these cards laying around that you know aren't trimmed then scan it along with the Williams and compare the two. I've saved my butt a few times doing this when I discovered that the card in the holder was smaller than the one I knew wasn't trimmed.
