1975 Hostess Panels: Ryan PSA 10, Carlton PSA 10, Carew PSA 9, Yount RC PSA 8, more now on ebay

Here are some highlights of my 1975 Hostess Panel submission. I'm planning on listing some of them Thursday on ebay for 10 days and the rest Sunday for the standard 7 days. These were all purchased privately as whole boxes, then very carefully cut into panels using a standard paper cutter. Enjoy!

That is awesome. My panels usually come back PSA 8, though I did manage 9's on 1971 Bazooka and 1978 Hostess. But two 10's and four 9's, holy cow. You must have a sharper paper-cutter and a sharper eye than I do!

The cuts on those are very well done, looks like professional cutting the way the edges are so perfectly even with the borders.

The PSA 8 looks every bit as good as the 9's and 10's.

Nice job. What's a Ryan panel worth in a 10 you think? I have a raw one that I have not graded because of submission restrictions that would wind up costing too much in shipping charges. Mine would be no higher than an 8 though... probably not even worth grading.

    Those are awesome.

Can you explain what you mean by "standard paper cutter?"
  • Alright, let me try to respond to all of you here:

    carew4me,

I'm very headstrong about listing these on ebay as opposed to private sales/trades. I'll be listing the Ryan, Carlton, Carew, and Yount Panels Thursday evening (8/4) on ebay with a low starting price (probably $9.99) and no reserve for 10 days and the rest on Sunday (8/7) for 7 days. After I list them, I'll add a link to this thread that will bring you right to my auctions. Thanks for the interest!

    A761506,

The cuts look good because I tried to leave a measured 1/16 inch 'overhang' all around. I first used a grocery box cutter to trim the panels to a manageable size, then the paper cutter.
I have no idea what the Ryan will go for. I'll find out on Sunday the 14th after the auctions close. I really hope that it does well as I did pay a decent amount for these boxes, but they were unused and in great shape, plus I spent a lot of time on the cuts.

    SoFLPhillyFan,

The paper cutter I used was the same as one that you would expect to see in a classroom or home office. Nothing special.

Also, I requested the 1975 Hostess Panels set to be added to the set registry. The Hostess set is 150 cards which means just 50 3-card panels. At 'just' 50, this set could be actually do-able. If anyone else has three or more of these panels, feel free to request the set as it may move it up the ladder more quickly. In addition, I requested the addition of the 1975 panels to any applicable player sets, so if they are not part of the individual player master sets now, they should be in the (hopefully) near future.

Here's a link to my email if anyone has anymore questions.

  • I personally like the Hostess panels intact and complete with the ads and such. If they are on the complete box, then even more so. I wonder with PSA grading the panels how that is going to affect the full panels in the future. It will obviously make the full panels more scarce. It used to be that most people preferred the full panels with ads. WIll the price rise on the full panels?

As for the '75 Ryan those are pretty plentiful and actually his cheapest of all his Hostess cards. It seems like full boxes are always offered of his from that year, along with a few of the others on your list. Just do a search on a '75 Ryan panel, and I will be that there are more '75 panels being offered than all the othe years combined. I'm not sure why they seem more numerous, but they sure look it.

I hope you do well on those, but even in ten or nine form they may not go through the roof.
  • Skinpinch,

Don't worry, I'm not planning on paying off my mortgage with these. The last Ryan SINGLE in PSA 9 went for $42.50. Here's a link. Since this is a full panel and a 10 instead of a 9, we'll see how it does.

I have seen a good number of these panels on ebay, but most are trimmed too closely or have been circulated. I've been checking ebay regularly for Hostess panels/boxes the last year or so.

I think that you're correct that the prices of full unused boxes will continue to rise thanks to PSA now grading them and the fact that this is easily the best way to get high grades. Most panels that were cut 30 years ago are probably cut way too close, have a corner ding or two, or have surface damage from being on the grocery store shelf.

Very very nice. Sorry if this has been discussed before, but any idea how big the actual panel can be and still fit in a PSA holder?
  • detroitfan2,

PSA uses the same holders for the Hostess panels as they do for the larger full tickets (Super Bowl, etc). The panel has to be trimmed pretty closely to fit in these holders. As you can see in the scans, there is very little room on the sides of the panels (maybe 1/16"). There is about 1/4" (maybe a little less) of space above the panel in the holder.

If you check out a newer SMR, The'Grading of Hand-Cut Cards' section of the 'PSA Grading Standards' section (pg 78 in Sept SMR) states that in order to achieve the highest grades, the cuts of the cards should be relatively close to the visible borders without exceeding the limit. The use of the word 'relatively' does make this very vague, but I took this as they want them cut close to the dotted line and since they're grading the cards, I complied. Like I mentioned in the thread above, I gave them a 1/16" border all around.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks jetfan, that helps a lot. Once again, those are some SWEET panels, and I hope to see the Hostess cards available on the registry soon. I'll be watching your auctions.

I have accumulated a nice bunch of panels (mostly with Rose on them, as I'm a rose master set guy!). I'm glad to hear you used a paper cutter! I go to office depot, and they allow me to use their paper cutter. They (my panels) look great, and I'm glad to see you have received mint 9s & 10s from PSA.

    Good news! image

edit: Lots of luck on your auctions (i.e. Ryan PSA 10!!!)

would this same cut (outside the borders) work for the 61 golden press? all of the golden press i see graded are on cut on the perforations. i think there is only 1 psa 10 graded so far.

    Thanks,

When I was a kid, I would separate these cards from the box by cutting ON the lines, because that's what you were supposed to do! That's what the dotted lines were for, right? Well, if you did that 30 years ago, no matter how nice, your card or panel will only get an AUTHENTIC from PSA, no grade. They like to see the dotted lines with a little border space around them, like ajetfan has done so masterfully here. Ironically, PSA 8 or 9 or 10 is really only possible with a panel cut freshly from a box, or with a previously-cut panel that still has some room to trim closer.

I guess they're like scratch-off cards and '64 Stand-Ups ... if you did what you were supposed to do with the card, it would be worth considerably less today. And now that I think about it, that's true for any card. If you played with it, flipped it, put it in a scrapbook, traded it with your friends ... it suffered from wear and tear and is worth a fraction of the card that is pulled out of a vintage pack or vending box today.

Just babbling. I value Mint cards the same as everyone else, and all my graded Hostess, Bazooka, etc. panels and cards are cut from whole boxes in the last couple years. Just makes ya think.
  • jrdolan,

Your comments are 110% correct. That's just the point I was trying to make to Skinpinch.

He's right, there are a ton of the 1975 (Nolan Ryan) Hostess panels that are heavily circulated or cut right on the lines available on ebay, but the full unused boxes are quite tough to find...and these are where the 9s and 10s come from!

  • Do these qualify for the tallboy special?
  • Carew29Carew29 Posts: 4,025 ✭✭

    NO.
  • Cubfan,

Not to argue with Carew29, but I think they should qualify. The thing is that none of the HOFers can be submitted as this special is for commons only. Don't take my word on it, but I'd try. Anyone else with any thoughts on this?
  • carew4mecarew4me Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭✭
If they exceed 5.5 " in length they do not qualify

    Jetfan,

not 2 b inquisitive, but inquiring minds were wondering if you profited off the hostess boxes investment?

excellent job getting them ready for grading, joe orlando may have a upper-level grading position for you should they relocated to east coast.

Hey--"jetfan" --- just checking---have you mailed off my Carew yet?
  • Carew29,
Yup, it was mailed awhile ago. I'll send you an email about it.
  • Carew29Carew29 Posts: 4,025 ✭✭

Sent you a reply back on what a great job our USPS doesn't do. As long as you had the correct address on the envelope, take it back to the Post Office and they will re-send it for free. I also sent you the Supervisor's telephone number if your Post Office gives you any problems.
