The thread that changed and became much more interesting!

Edited to say: This started out with me asking if eBay was having indigestion (I couldn't post my auctions). Turned out the problem was on my end, so I changed the thread to "Never mind!" And then, with absolutely nothing worth responding to, posts started springing up anyway. Like fungus on that month-old muffin in the fridge. Some of the posts below are pretty cool.

The Reds were ROBBED in the strike-shortened '94 season! They had the best combined record in the NL, but the stupid rule they chose to use screwed Cincinnati royally. Kinda like when more people voted for Gore than for Bush, but Bush won on an Electoral College technicality (that and polling-place shenanigans in Gov. Jeb's state).

There, I feel better. I have to vent about both of those injustices every once in awhile.

I'm assuming you mean 1981, when the Reds had the best record in the West (and the whole NL), and the Cardinals had the best record in the East. 4 teams go to the Playoffs, and neither the Reds or the Cardinals are among them. The vote when the season resumed was 10-2 in the NL to adopt the hare-brained playoff scheme - with the Reds and Cardinals being the "no" votes.

Of course that travesty was soon to be forgotten in the wake of the greatest travesty in the history of baseball, nay, in the history of all mankind, when Don "Mr. Magoo" Denkinger awarded the 1985 World Series to the Royals. If that man had had an ounce of honor in his entire gelatinous body, he would have carved out his own entrails before the sun rose the next morning - but, of course, he did not have that elusive ounce of honor, so instead he filed suit to prevent a company in St. Louis from selling a poster showing ol' Don calling Orta safe at first before Orta even reached the base.

    There, I feel better, too.

Oops! Had a brain f*rt there. Of course, 1981. It was '94 that the strike canceled the World Series. Maybe even a bigger travesty to have NO champion that year than to have the wrong champions in '81 and '85.

    jr,

You're correct about the '94 WS being the canceled one. That, with the other lockouts, etc, and Mr. Puckett having to retire in spring of '96, was the fork in the meat for me. I used to live and breath baseball before that period, even going to the lengths of wishing everyone I came in contact with a "Happy New Year!" when spring training started! I'm still put off by most pro athletes and how they can't relate to us common cards...

Not if Barry Bonds were to break the all-time HR record. nor even if Craig Biggio were never to make the Hall of Fame, will there ever, EVER, be a travesty as monumental as the 1985 World Series.

I will never, ever, ever get over this - why won't they let me be - GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!! - I've tried counseling, I've tried medication - I SAID GET OUT!!! - but nothing seems to work. I mean it's been (LEAVE ME ALONE!!) 20 years, you'd think I wouldn't be quite so sensitive about it (DIE, DENKINGER, DIE! AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO!) anymore, but I just can't seem to forget about it. I mean, it's only a game, right? Right?

    Stone,

You a Braves fan? I knew there was something right about you. Not a finer team in all of sports! I have loved them since they won the pennant in '82 and through all the sucky teams when Dale Murphy was the one thing worth watching.
