'Helping his own cause'

Is it just me, or does this phrase, when applied to a pitcher getting a hit and driving in a run, drive anyone else nuts? I can think of fewer sports cliches that are more overused and simply just need to be retired.

    Call Tim McCarver.

It's not just one sportscaster (and I never listen to Tim...he's bloody awful).

It seems across all channels, in all markets, this cliche gets abused to death. Seemingly every night I hear it.

Yes, Tim McCarver is awful but sometimes I have no choice if I want to watch the Yankees.

Well watching/listening to the yankees on any network other than their home market would be an improvement. Hell, having someone sign the game to me would be an improvement over 'this insignificant part of the game brought to you by such-and-such advertiser!' and 'wow, that ball's out of here...err, I mean it's a long fly out'
