OT - Computer problems - Resolved

I just tried to upgrade my antivirus software for another year. Big mistake. The 2005 Norton Internet Security suite was improperly installed by me.

I'll see you lot later once I get this imageimage computer back up.

At least all of my files were safely backed up...

Windows XP has issues with Nortons if you have installed the service pack 2........something about the windows firewall wont let you do anything, even if you tell it that it's okay to do it. My computer had the SP2 when I got it and it wouldnt even let me load games or MS Word...etc.......Nortons or Zonealaram was a waste of effort to load. Finally I had to reformat and reload XP without the SP2 to get it to work.

I don't know if this will work for you, but with XP & SP2 I use the firewall in NIS and disable the Windows Firewall (as recommended by NIS). Mine seems to work perfectly.

I tried that too..............disabling the windows firewall. Didn't work fer me. Course, this machine was a trade from a neighbor whos neices boyfriend was using it to look at internet porn all day.............talk about some nasty stuff. I ran spybot and ad-aware and it found over 300 instances of spyware. Finally the reformat was my only option.

  • Interesting. My neighbor tried to install the Norton upgrade last night. No success trying to get it to run. The only option she gets on the Norton menu is "Uninstall."

It looks like my final solution will be to reformat the hard drive. Everything on the machine works again except that it will not access the internet. Winsock was probably killed.

Using the backup machine, which runs a cable modem connection but responds like a dial-up. At least it is serviceable.

Hi folks, back online. I guess I need to read all of the instructions, like an engineer never does... image

Glad to hear you finally got the problems resolved. I am not a Norton fan at all. I tried installing their 2004 System Works package, which included a virus scanner, but it would not install. I wrestled with the thing for days before just dumping it and buying a package from Trend Micro instead. It installed beautifully and has worked fine for over a year. CNET.com highly recommends it, too.
