newbie questions on 74 baseball

Sorry if this is a basic question. I mostly collect pre-90's football and basketball, so I am not up to speed on some of these things.

I decided to do this set because this is the first issue of any sport I bought as a kid. FWIW, a Hank Aaron special in a cello pack caught my eye at the cash register.

1. #654/654A - Jesus Alou variation. What is the differences between the two?

2. Washington Nationals variations. Was a team checklist (the red autograph cards) made?

3. Any other variations that are out there?

Thanks for your help.

    Hi.

One Alou does not feature a position.

"Washington Nationals" were printed - in hot pink - on some San Diego Padres cards in anticipation of a possible move, which of course, never transpired.

    Hope this helps.

    My first set, too!

I have 10 of the 15 "Nat'l Lea." player cards that I'm aware of, and they look like just like the Padres version. Which cards have the hot pink? Do you have a scan or a link?

Thanks for the info on the Alou. Mine is the blank version.

There's also an error version of card #608 (rookies)--with Apodaca misspelled "Apodaco."

And there are 3 versions of #599 (rookies) with Dave Freisleben indentified as with "Washington" then "San Diego" written large, then "San Diego" written smaller.

Speaking of the 3 variations for card #599, I am in desperate need
of the 2 San Diego versions as well as card #213 in PSA 8 grade or
better. Can any board members help me complete this set?????

The '74 set is one of the best to collect because of the variations.
It was my first "hands on" set. I even tacked all the Cardinals on the wall. It makes me cringe to think about it.

Of course, I also have Brock, Torre, Simmons and Tyson autos on those cards - so they ain't going anywhere.

You picked a good year to collect.
