Excessive Shipping costs on Cards?

If you think $5-6 for shipping on cards in expensive, try $70 for a couple tv dvd boxed sets shipped via media mail and that's not even including insurance. They also don't combine shipping costs, but you will save $2 off the full price of the next shipping cost. So it sounds like you pay $70 for the first and a really good deal of only $68 for the second!

I would guess the package would weigh 10 lbs max which would be around $5-$6 media mail I believe.

Yes, a tad bit excessive I'd say. Wonder how many suckers he'll reel in with that one?

Axtell said all that needs to be said on this subject in an earlier thread. Check the shipping costs, and factor it into your bid price. End of story. High shipping costs are just a way of circumventing ebays' fees'-- something which I personally advocate. If I didnt' think it would keep the hammer price down I would charge 20$ shipping on every card I sold.

Was this an ebay auction? Link?

Did you know it going in? That is high - obviously "handling" to offset the fact that they know they won't make any money on the item. Was it still a good deal? Just curious.

    Hey Boo

Last time I checked, NBA paid the same dues to post here as you (and AX). He did not complain, was just bringing it up the way I read it which is his right.

edit: I don't think it's necessary for people to give these curt remarks when someone brings something up. I don't think it's fair for someone to receive a lecture or admonishment or what I perceive as "strong" rather than friendly advice. Anyway, I didn't see where he asked for advice on this issue?

    Stone-

You're right. Looking back, my post seems unnecessarily harsh.

The larger point I was trying to make is that many buyers on Ebay grouse about exhorbitant shipping fees without looking at the big picture. But it would not be fair for me to assume that NBAFan fits into that group based on his initial post in this thread.

NBA Fan, no offense was meant-- and I hope none taken.
  • i was gonna post the "just factor in you bid" spiel, but it's been said to death...

    some more food for thought:

my dad recently mailed something that was slightly too big for the little priority boxes they had at the po. he had no other choice then to buy a box at one of those little rip-off pak-mail places, $5.99 for an empty box image

also, handling may be a few dollars, but ever buy something from an auction house? Their premiums can be upwards of 17.5% image

    Thanx Boo
I don't want to come off as the sportscard forum etiquette cop or anything - NBA's a good guy and was only saying - "Hey, look at this!"

I know, it's Monday, and anyone who doesn't have a weekend hangover of some kind is a better man than me!

    thanx again

God, I am so in the wrong business.

Along a similar line-- I once paid $42 to have a leather coat shipped at one of those 'Mailboxes etc.' type shops. How any of these outfits ever stay in business is utterly beyond me.

Actually it's not an auction, it's an ebay store seller. Seller makes the price look good until you check out shipping fees and note that they only ship via media mail and combined shipping saves $2 on the full cost of shipping of an additional item in the package.

I almost bought, until I noticed all the fine print.

I am betting that a lot of people get scammed this way, and I'd almost put money on it that the seller isn't really a "store/warehouse" but actually selling and purchasing from somewhere like Deep Discount DVD where the shipping is free and cost is low.

I just bought a new sell phone on eBay and noticed the same thing with shipping. Some of the guys were charging $50 and some were charging $10. Crazy.

And the bad part of it is the fact that you don't see the shipping cost until you click their link.

Basically they are getting more people to click their links, because they "undersell" other ebay competitors before shipping costs, but those not paying attention or thinking that they only charge $2 per additional item get burned in the end.

I have no problem with sellers getting a few dollars more for an item through shipping, but when you are talking $10+ and shipping multiple items in the same package without combining shipping costs better is ridiculous.

I guess when you think about it, ebay has caused the problem by increasing their fees on pretty much every aspect of their site. More money for 10 Day, BIN, icons, bold, featured, etc. etc. Then top that off with their new paypal policy and I expect Bill Gates to be buying ebay out any day now. I mean even Bill could use a few billion more.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

What a dolt - that auction won't last long...
