Gorgeous 18th century medal.

I watched it, but it went too rich for my wallet:

    Wow, that's impressive.

I wouldn't call something with George III on it "gorgeous", but the condition and engraving of the medal is certainly amazing. image

PS-I like the thaler in your sigline more.

And Lizzie in your icon. (That's an ex-python icon, no?)

As far as the icon, I have no idea. It just seemed attractive to me. I'd use the one in my sig, but since I can't upload my own...

Actually the piece in my sig is not a thaler, but a 1728 24 Mariengroschen piece from Stolberg-Rossla (date unlisted in Krause).

Here's the thread from when I originally obtained it: Linky

    Large pictures below.

I've been away from the board for about 2.5 years, concentrating on my philatelic vice (not to mention others), but I stumbled across a box of darkside that I bought 2 years ago that I never processed, and it got me thinking again...

Aha. Still a big sucker, I see, judging from the scale of the PCGS plastic visible in the picture.

Aren't there thalers with that deer design? (I guess it would be more properly called a "hart").

I think the medal is just wonderful. Only the condition and the original packaging justifies the price though. The copper version of this medal is quite a bit more rare. Of course I'm just jealous; I don't have either... image

I'd say that medal is a stunner.

Actually i think George III looks very majestic on that (looks as if it's based loosly on his coronation State Portrait). Come on George III wasn't that bad looking there's been worse, Thomas Jefferson for one.

And the Spanish kings with the big noses (Charles III and IV), not to mention one of history's most fitting æsthetically challenged couples, Mary Tudor and the big chin himself Phillip II.
