If this '63 Rose PSA 8 isn't a scam, I'll eat my own '63 Rose.

1963 Rose rookie PSA 8 with red flags all over it. Here are the terms of the auction (and my translations):

1-day auction (I usually use 5 and 7-day auctions for my modern junk, but for this expensive stuff I need to hit-and-run.)

private bidding (I don't want experienced eBayers talking to my newbie bidders or seeing my shills.)

accepts money orders only: NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. (Or PayPal either. I don't want you canceling your check or trying to get your money back.)

Welcome to the #1 Auction house. (#1 on my street, that is.)

We are a very large distributor of High end cards so please be paitent. (Actually, "we" is me, a small-time seller of 2005 pack rips. This set of auctions is my first attempt at pretending to sell expensive vintage cards. But please be patient anyway, and give me ample time to make my getaway with your dough.)

Condition: Mint (I know the scan I "borrowed" says PSA 8 NM-MT, but I say the scan looks like 9 Mint!

All this seems fairly clear from the indications, but the odd thing is that he has some feedback for selling, albeit only for autos and other stuff out of 2005 packs he bought at Wal-Mart. I simply cannot believe the Rose and other vintage are legit with these red flags, so I guess he is ready to dump his title as the "1 Auction House" and run for the hills after these sales.

'sigh'. I really get tired of this stuff. About every month or so another human torch screams through Ebay and scorches another couple dozen collectors. At some point Ebay is going to have it's day of reckoning, and I want a front row seat when that happens.

"I agree fleabay better get its act together. "

LOL-- FleaBay. I like that. Sorry, but any outfit making that kind of money could step out a bit and work to protect it's customers. A few well placed lawsuits against fraudulent sellers--and some appropriate publicity surrounding these lawsuits--would go a long way.

I'm just not sure what Fleabay could do to stop this sort of thing. Only use Paypal?

I reported a bunch of the most obvious scams to eBay. Hopefully somebody is on duty and can shut these down before they end and anybody sends any money to this scummy person. I didn't notice at first just how many huge cards he was scamming, including the mandatory '52 Mantle. This is designed as the score of a lifetime, and selling the 2005 pack rips was just the prep, to build up a little feedback. Here are some of the numbers, if you want to just copy and paste into eBay's reporting box here. If a bunch of people report this, eBay just may take notice.

    5222848758, 5222849522, 5222849454, 5222849345, 5222849340, 5222849657, 5222849674, 5222849763

I went through and looked at the PSA numbers on the cards and several were submitted together. Do you want some ketchup on that 63'?
Just kidding. This image is about to let some really nice stuff go without a reserve? Are you kidding me?

I don't think the link I posted above is the correct one for reporting fraudulent auctions, it's for keyword violations. But I can't find the right eBay page for fraud reporting, it seems to have moved to someplace I can't see.

    paitent?
    folow?

It's clear this scammer also isn't a "very large distributor" of dictionaries.
  • Ebay is spineless when it comes to stuff like this. Selective enforcement sums it up best. I've had it happen in the past where they shut me down but 20 other people sell the same kind of item. Total b.s.! If they were serious they would hire people like us who know what to look for.

Who knows. Put yourself in fleabay's shoes and see how hard it would be.

The thing that throws me off about these auctions is that the acct was set up 5 years ago. That's a long time to hatch a scam. I'm thinking that an email asking to see the cards in person and paying in cash face to face would be in order.

Yes! Our fraud reports did accomplish something. eBay killed the auctions and sent this notice to bidders:

Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party. The seller's privileges to trade on eBay may be temporarily suspended while we investigate this matter further. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share further details related to this seller.

If someone claiming to be the seller asks you to complete a transaction outside of eBay, we strongly recommend that you ignore the request. Transactions for items listed on eBay that are completed outside of the eBay marketplace are not covered by the Buyer Protection services offered by eBay and can be highly indicative of fraud.

The hijack theory sounds odd, since the account was advertising this blitz while it was still selling cheap junk. But at least eBay agreed that it was very fishy and pulled the plug while it investigates. What we did WORKED ... something that talking sternly to him over the phone would not have accomplished (even if he had provided a real number).

IJLC, I think he was bidding on things like that Clemente rookie to make himself look like a high roller and therefore trustworthy on the matter of his own wares. He never planned to pay for anything he won; he was gonna be long gone by the time the NPB notices went out.

"he" also won a 10k ruth auto. GREAT work guys.

receved this this moring from ebay.

The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:

    Item Number - 5222849192
Item Title - 74 1974 Topps Football Wax Box "unopend box"

Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from
the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has
been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party. The seller's
privileges to trade on eBay may be temporarily suspended while we investigate
this matter further. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share
further details related to this seller.

of eBay, we strongly recommend that you ignore the request. Transactions for
items listed on eBay that are completed outside of the eBay marketplace are not
covered by the Buyer Protection services offered by eBay and can be highly
    indicative of fraud.

If you have already paid, you may wish to pursue recuperating your funds. Some
    steps you might take include:

    1. Ask the seller for a refund
    2. If you paid by check, ask your bank to stop payment
    3. If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company's security
    department
    4. If you have made a payment by money order or wire transfer, you may
contact that company for further information at 1-800-325-6000 (Western Union),
    or at 1-800-926-9400 (Money Gram)
    5. If you paid with PayPal, review the Buyer Complaint Process at:

We are quick to complain about Ebay but it seems to me over the last month or so they have gotten alot better at shutting down questionable auctions at a much more rapid pace. ..........I have seen just this morning two examples of 1 day "probable scam" auctions that have been shut down within hours of them being listed.
    Collector of:Baseball
1955 Bowman Raw complete with 90% Ex-NR or better

Now seeking 1949 Eureka Sportstamps...NM condition
Working on '78 Autographed set now 99.9% complete -
Working on '89 Topps autoed set now complete

I agree with that but there is still room for improvement. For example they let that Brett 1975 Rookie PSA 10 go to completion despite it being a stolen scan - and ebay was supposedly told about this many days before the auction ended. There was a thread here on this. Fortunately, the buyer posted here that he didn't get stung because some CU members warned him.
  • Jr,
you maybe correct, I am not sure..It will be interesting to see the ruth item and clemente item play out..

but lets say it was a hijacked account, what does ebay do? restore the account with the same ebay ID?, or do they allow you a new ID and yet still keep your previous feedback rating and erase any feedback that you got during the "hijacked period"?

If it was me, I'd want a new ID with my pre-hijacking feedback transferred. After all, the old ID has been tainted and people now associate it with "scam." Of course you can just rename your ID, too.

I just hope the hijacker (if that's what happened) didn't get access to the real eBayer's PayPal or credit card or bank account, and pay for the Clemente and Ruth auto that way.
