But how will you know if it's a wig or their real hair? I mean, you can't exactly tug on it, or anything... image

And i've got a Louis XVI 10th ecu on the way.

Basically silver coins 21mm sized or near to showing pictures of a monarch in a wig on one side, dated between 1780-1789

    Now i make the preliminary list as follows;

    Spain - Charles III reale
    Spain - Charles IV reale
Holy Roman Empire - Joseph II (Not sure if any denomination matches my goals though)
    Sweden - Gustav III (Denomination?)
    Denmark - Christian VII (Denomination?)
Russia - Catherine the Great (Denomination)
    Austria - Maria Theresa (Denomination?)

Can anyone add anything to this list, or update me on the denominations...

Well generally you can tell because 18th century high society fashion dictated that they'd wear short wigs with ties in.

Although by the 1780s wigs were not as common amongst the younger generations who used to use their own hair. Either way it doesn't really matter, as long as it's got a mugshot of an 18th century ruler on it then it's in.

One example that might break the wig mold. Did Pius VI issue coins?

    Poland. King Poniatowski.

Is to the exclusion of your magnificent early English rulers set?

How about Friedrich Wilhelm II and III of Prussia?

I like the "rulers brandishing swords" theme. The sword over the shoulder. Like on Saxony thalers. And some Polish coins, I think. And in English coins, there are the equestrian coins of James I and Charles I where the king is on horseback with the sword on his shoulder.

Cheers for the Prussian and Poland ones. I haven't got a Krause so i'm gathering the info as best i can for now.

This set is to add a bit more diversity to my collection. The collect was very British-Centric. Hopefully this should change things a bit.

Due to lack of portrait Portugal can be omitted.

So Lord Marcovan will you be doing the swords theme then? image (It's a good theme)

Well looks like i've got plenty on then; (got/to get)

    1) Anglo-Saxon two line type pennies 899-975 (horizontal silver type set) 3/6
    2) Henry VI Silver type set, Annulet issue 1422-7 (vertical silver type set) 1/5
    3) US P mint Double Eagles 1920-28 (gold coin date set) 1/8 with another reserved
    4) P Mint Washington Quarters 1950-64 in BU (silver coin date set) 8/15
    5) UNC Nazi Germany A mint 5 reichspfennigs 1936-44 (Notorious regime date run) 3/9
    6) Sixpence sized coins of 1780s Europe. (misc) 1/??

I think that should make it a rather diverse collection all in all.

Some of those sets can be expanded when they are completed should ui decide to do so. For instance the Third Reich stuff could move to the 10 reichsfennigs next.

The Henry VI set could have the gold re-included. The Washington quarters can be taken back to 1940. The Anglo-Saxon pennies could go back to Alfred the Great. But one thing at a time. image

Once i've finished the Washington quarters to whatever date then i can move onto perhaps some earlier US coins. I'd like to keep my options open for now.

Pius VI indeed issued coinage. However, his busts seem to be with well coiffed hair, rather than with a wig.

Looks like this new collection has already gone off course. I've seen something...

Joseph II so it fits the wig theme lovely, but it's not silver and it the wrong size. But the truth is i've wanted one of these for a while, the denomination is not quite right since the face value is double the one i had wanted but it's the right design and everything.

Ever since i got that HRE Francis imitation ducat back in the mid 90s i've wanted a real one. I searched the site on the off chance of finding something Spanish or something and that one jumped straight out at me. I thought hey two birds, one stone. Why not?

Nah. I'm gonna stick with the Holey Coin Vest and Holey Gold Hat, and continue to work on my daughter's 1901 Victorian type set. Beyond that, I'm not much of a collector anymore. Just a smalltime dealer.

But it would be neat to see the "kings with swords" theme done. I think it's a good one.
