I don't collect autographs at all. They do not appeal to me in the least. That said, I bid on the ball. I was immediately outbid though. I have always been a Brett fan. As a kid I remember not liking the 1975 SSPC set, but I loved the Brett card with him making a crazy face. I also vividly remember watching the Pine Tar Bat game.

A friend of mine caddied for Michael Jordan a while back and asked Michael if he was staying at the club for a while after the round. Michael told him he was and my friend asked MJ if he ran home to get hi MJ jersey if he would sign it. MJ said sure.
So my friend ran home and got it and got back and met up with MJ. He and MJ really were talking and joking around during the round. MJ asked him what he should write and whil joking about it that phrase came up. That is how MJ signed it. A few weeks later my buddy went to work and there was a package there. It was another signed jersey from MJ with "Best of luck" inscribed instead and a note that said "Thanks for being a good sport. I could tell you didn't want your jersey signed that way."
I saw both jerseys and he has them both framed and on the wall in his basement now. That is a true rarity. As is that ball.
I like that Jordan story--he seems like a class guy to send another jersey just because. Its hard for huge megastars to be friendly to everyone and give the attention they deserve.

How did the story go? As I recall, the kid was pestering him, or something, and Brett became a bit annoyed. As a sixth grade teacher, I will admit that kids can really get under a guy's skin.
You're right . . . Funny and sad at the same time.
I sent the guy with the F-bomb ball the following message..
<< <i>Curious.. Did he sign the ball out of anger or was he just jokeing around? >>
He sent me this reply..
<< <i>It was somewhere in between. Brett does have a short temper, especially when you bring up the pine tar episode. We did make peace a few years after this ball was signed. He signed another one for me, but this time it was in fun. Thanks for your interest..........................Richard >>
I would LOVE to have a ball signed "F**k you, Johnny Bench." But I don't think Johnny would write that even if the guy holding the ball told him he sucked as a player, his wife once banged the NY Mets, and his mama wore shin guards.
after the capital one bowl last year, i saw drew tate at hooters and had him sign my ticket....you guessed it....F**K the tigers; drew tate! what a class act. i'll have to scan a pic.

My bet is that it was *well* deserved...though the rumor has always been that Brett can be a bit difficult.
"Avoid the clap,
Jimmy Dugan"
no "Derek" or "Jeter" or even "DekJer" included......just "NO"
