Phillip III 323-317 BC

Here is a Silver Drachm of Phillip III, who was Alexander the Greats brother. He wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer... I think it's actually Alexander since it's him in the portrait according Sherman Clark who was an ancient history teacher and coin collector down in Texas? Got this one while on vacation to Vermont a few years back. Just about the size of a dime.

Nice one. I had big huge Alexander tetradrachm with that design. (Posthumous, struck a year or two after his death)

The portrait shows Alexander as Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion. Slaying the lion was the first of Hercules twelve labors.

I always associated this design with Alexander, but I guess it isn't surprising that Phillip (Alexander's half-brother) might've also used it. At first I thought you were referring to Phillip II, who was of course the father of Alexander the Great.

The reverse is Zeus holding an eagle.

  • Phillip III only ruled for a couple of years after Alexander's death and then as coruler with Alexander IV.

Alexander the Great's mother, Olympias, is one of the great ******s of the ancient world. After Phillip II divorced her, she murdered Phillip II and his new wife, Phillip III's mother. She was going to make sure that Alexander became king. After Alexander's death she had Phillip III murdered so Alex IV would be king. Sometimes it's not good to be the king.
