eBay brain fart - do I have a recourse?

Earlier tonight I won this Topps 205 Shawn Green card, which the seller touts in the title as being 1/5. He also goes on to describe that all Brooklyn-backed mini cards in the first series were printed to only 5 copies. I was at work at the time and didn't do the proper research regarding the actual scarcity of the card. I got home later on and got this sick feeling that I had bid on a card that for all intents & purposes is close to worthless. Sure enough, find this article on Beckett that lists which cards are actually printed to 5.

I fired off an email to the seller, politely explaining his mistake (and mine, for not doing proper research). I'm hoping that he is an understanding guy, but if not, will eBay step in and take care of me due to the erroneous title and description? If he doesn't take care of me, and eBay can't (or won't) do anything about it, it's not like $21 is going to break me - I'd rather pay for it than take the neg for non-payment.

Any thoughts?

If he is a straight up person, he should kill the transaction and re-list the card explaining why. If he isn't, and you fear retaliation of a neg, you answered your own question.

I would think ebay would actually back you up in this instance since the card is clearly being misrepresented in the auction description. On a side note, do you miss the Enterprise?

ah, I see. I was feeling a little slow this morning. The ST dude's name was spelled Geordi - not sure why, but there it is.

The name originates from Northern England/Scotland. I guess there's a whole group of people up there that are called "Geordies". My parents actually pulled the name from a Joan Baez tune. I've never heard it, and have no intention of checking it out - not a big Baez fan.

Can't see how the guy missed this one? This is card #25 - but there is no #/5?

The guy has had zero negs in the last 12 months - I'm thinking he will call the deal off?

I would not want to fork out 20 clams for that.

    Sure hope so

Mike - in the Topps 205 set, the /5 cards weren't stamped. Even the Bazooka minis, which were printed to 4 with a blue back and printed to 1 with a red back, were not stamped. I actually pulled one of the blue backs (Miguel Cabrera) last year at a show in Vegas - no stamped number on the back (flipped for an $80 BIN).

The Beckett article lists around 20 cards that are #ed to 5, but the Green isn't one of them. If I had done my research, I could have looked at my stack of mini Dodgers and seen that not only do I already have a Green, but I also have the Jordon, Ishii and Gagne that are also in Series 1. The seller was under the impression that every card in the first series was /5. I explained that in the email, which he resonded to last night. He wants to do a little more research, but to his credit, he told me to hold off payment for the time being until he finds out more. I'm sure the situation will be resolved satisfactorily.

I would ask out of the deal. the seller if decent will allow it. he may have thought it was a (of 5) or whatever. when you explain to him that it is in fact not Im sure he will come around.

    Good for you.

Steve, the impression I got from his reply last night leads me to believe that that is exactly what he will do. He seems like a stand up guy.

On a much better note, I did pick up a '49 Bowman Gil Hodges RC a couple days ago for under $7 from krukcards. For $7, it's sure not a beauty - it'll fit in just fine with the other Tipton Mint Dodgers in my vintage collection! Not sure what's up with the slant across the top, but I'm pretty comfortable with kruk's reputation - if it isn't real, then I'm only out a small amount.

Why not just email him the Beckett link and show him that the card is a common?

image I'll have to pass, I've already got one, plus potentially another on the way. Of course, if there are only five made, does that mean I could own three of them?

Because I can! We have a family-owned business, and I can sneak a little eBay time in when we're slow.

Mike, I did that very thing last night. Not only did I email him the Buckett article, but I also sent him a link from their search engine that pulled up about 20 of the Green cards - all of them were selling for under a buck (some dim bulb was asking $4 for his though).

You might be stuck with a neg for non payment. Good luck with the seller though, there are still some decent people out there.image
