I think this is a better investment than a 10k bonds

Selling for about 500$ on ebay. These are far more scare than the 86 tiffany, and hopefully there will be no 'roid rumors around Clemens. discuss!

for a crossover only of course!

I agree. I'd crossover that older style SG holder into one of the newer SGC holders, and the card would look just as sweet!

Great card no doubt, but why would you feel Clemens should be excluded from 'roids discussion?

I ass-u-me you were asking me, but we all know what happens when one assumes!

I'll take that as a compliment.

I don't care for that version of the SGC flip. It looks too much like a kitchen-table flip.
  • I've heard that a lot has changed since the days of the original flips at SGC and that they won't guarantee a crossover from the old SG to the new SGC flips. I could be wrong though...
  • That was my card that I sold in an ebay auction. Its a fantastic card, much rarer than the regular Topps, although I don't think as many people know about it. Whatever the buyer does with it (cross it to PSA, get a new flip, keep it as is), the bottom line is its a fantastic card.

This card shows the nature of the modern day PSA graded cards. I bought this card a few years ago - I forget when, probably 2000. I lost money on it - a couple $100. Not good, but figuring Clemens is at the peak of his popularity, it shows how horrible the market in these cards has done. Its not just the SGC holder, the PSA 10 1985 Topps Clemens and the PSA 10 1985 Donruss Clemens that I sold also lost a few $. Not to mention the 8 card lot of 1995 Bowman's Best PSA 10 Andruw Jones that I just sold at $100 each - I bought those at an average price of $800 each. Yikes.

I bought and sold a bunch of cards back then, so I made enough to cover these losses. Its a good thing I sold every 1990 Leaf Sosa PSA 10 I had - I had maybe 15 graded and come back as 10s back in 2000, and was able to get $500ish for them. Now they are $150 or so? All in all, I think I broke even from all the modern day cards that I bought raw, had graded and sold - some of them not until now.

The only cards I bought back then that kept its value or have gone up, are the vintage cards - 33 Goudeys specifically. Many on this board have said that's the way to go if you don't want to see your money shrink over the years, and I agree. The demand is still there, many are putting sets together. And the supply is limited and won't increase or get diluted (meaning that there won't be a 1934 Babe Ruth card coming out next year).

Sorry for the rambling comments, just in the mood to type.
