1920's flannel pennant ?

I can't get the picture small enough to post here but a similar item is on e-bay #5221050651. I have 21 different ones. 2 Joe Jackson's and a Walter Johnson are the only names I've heard of. Is ther a demand for these and possible prices. The ones that I have are in perfect condition. I know perfect is subjective but they are very nice. Nothing like the one listed on e-bay. Your expertise would be appreciated.
Thanks

  • They're B18 blankets, and they were produced in 1914.

  • There is always a demand for Walter Johnson and Joe Jackson, even if its thier name on the head of a pin. There are different combinations of infields and basepaths, but most still command roughly the same prices.............
  • I checked e-bay and e-bay stores. Mike Wheat Vintage Cards has alot listed. He has put grades out as Ex, Ex-Mt and so forth. His prices range from $20 to $600. The blankets I have are much better than anything I have seen so far. I'm assuming PSA doesn't grade these. Is there any kind of SMR for these blankets depending on condition? Thanks for the help in identifying these
  • I'm not sure if there is an established SMR on the blankets, but someone may know better.

As a general rule, take MW's prices and divide by 2.5 to find the SMR.

  • Anyone else have any more info on these?

If they are as nice as you say they are, get someone to grade them. If PSA won't do it, I'm sure GAI will stuff them into some type of holder and assign a grade. Don't give them away, especially if they are in nice shape.

As was linked, they are approx. 5" square flannels - the term "blankets" was adopted for them because many of them were sewn together to form a bed cover.

Difference color combinations on the flannels exist for all 10 teams included in the set.

So the set of 90 will set you back about 5 grand - the full set size with all variations is 202 and will set you back about 40 grand.

What color blanket do you have of the J. Jackson? Are you going to put them up on ebay?

  • One has purple pennants and bases with green baseline and the other has yellow pennants and bases with a purple baseline. I may put some up on e-bay after I research these blankets some more. Thanks for the help

The purple in Nm books at 1450$ and the yellow in Nm for 1750$.

If these can be graded, I would!

    Very nice....how about a scan?

  • thanks Mike, Where do you find the pricing for these? I have tried to put pictures up before and they end up too big. I can get the same size on ebay but not on the boards

Here ya go guys - here are two fantastic Jackson blankets!

    Jackson variation #1

    Jackson variation #2

I linked them instead of posting since he scanned them the size of Texas!LOL

Now, my next honest question would have to be....have these been counterfeited? These are in good shape!

These things were actually wrapped around cigarette packs!

  • I havent heard of any recent or past counterfeits. Not that it was implied, but having 21 different would make one believe these are the real McCoy. Like the 52 Mantle, if someone only had the Jackson it might seem a bit fishy. Everytime I make a "find" of old stuff, every star seems to be missing since most "kids" were picked clean by the older kids before they took what was left and put it in a shoebox to be found 40 years later in the attic..........
  • Thanks for getting these posted. They were from a grandfather through the inlaws. Cleaned out a house about 5 years ago. No 52 mantle unfortunately. I e-mailed PSA and they do not authenticate or grade. Does anyone know where to find SMR's on these
    Thanks

If you check up a ways, I posted the value from the 2004 Standard Catalog of BB by Krause. I don't think there will be major changes in these due to the rarity and market focus - IMO - but, I would check with GAI or SGC and see if they would authenticate them.

These sound good enough to be put in a major auction IMO.

I echo this opinion. I'm 90% sure I've seen GAI slab these. Jackson items from his playing days will earn you large money.

Having looked at buying some blankets lately, I have to say that those are by far the nicest I've seen.

Absolutely wonderful to see them preserved so well.

    Please show us more.

    Good luck!

    Mike:

I would too but they are really pricey. Another item I came across while looking for things to decorate my new place.

Of course I wouldn't expose such nice examples to constant light. If I bought some to frame they would be lesser quality blankets.

It's really great to see them and I hope they stay together as a set and find a good home. It seems many sets and collections are split up which has its good and bad points and these comments are certainly not meant to influence poolman in his decision. Each situation is different and we all make decisions based on having the most knowledge of the situation.

I would think that these will attract some major interest if auctioned with Mastro, Lelands, or another large house.

When I see these they remind me of my grandfather who was about 20 when they were made. What a fantastic era. I have a 1920 pump action 22 rifle that he bought with soap box tops. It is fully functional. When he passed away in 1984 each of his five grandsons was given the chance to pick something by which to remember him. I had spent hours with that rifle as a kid, never shooting it just looking at it.
