59,60,61 Topps Grading

I am new to PSA membership and would like a perspective from those more capable as to why 70% of PSA population is 7 and above while only 52% of Beckett for the subject years...all the good guys go to PSA??? or something else???

ADVICE....Wise men don't need it and fools don't heed it

The percentages used for comparison should be taken from the pops of the star cards only.
For example, PSA has graded only 31 % of 1959 Mantles an unqualified 7 or higher.

The vintage cards sent to Beckett for grading are almost exclusively star cards,
while PSA grades tons of vintage commons which is going to bring their overall average grade up significantly.

  • I checked Beckett 1959 Mantle and they are at 6.6% with seven or higher...I don't get your point

Just seems that PSA grades are higher across board from a percentage standpoint

    Thanks for your comments!

Okay, bad example on the Mantle, I should have looked it up before posting. image

    Here's some better points :

Beckett used to grade vintage cards with their regular BGS service.
Under that service they were actually a bit tougher on vintage than SGC or PSA.
Hardly anyone was using it so they came up with BVG which grades a bit easier than SGC or PSA.

The pops of vintage cards that had been graded under the tough BGS standard
were just lumped in with the new pops of the more easily graded BVG cards,
so without knowing how many of each is in the pop report, it's pretty tough to draw any conclusions from the data.

Another point is that collectors and dealers repeatedly break out 'high end for the grade' PSA cards
and resubmit them in the hopes of receiving a higher grade which throws off PSA's pop numbers,
making it appear that more 7's, 8's, and 9's of certain cards exist than actually do.

One last point is that the vast majority of collectors and dealers don't submit
their top vintage cards to Beckett for the simple reason that don't sell for as much
as they would if they were in the holder of a company more respected by vintage collectors.

  • Sounds plausible.
