Re: '76 Topps Fisk SMR = $ 65 for PSA 9 Guess How Much for a PSA 10?

Boy! I wanted this card for my 1976 Topps #1 Registry Set, I stopped at $351, which was 6 times the PSA 9 SMR price guide. Bidding continued and the "hammer price" was: $737.00

1976 Topps Fisk PSA 10

Between me, and the other four or five "1976 Topps PSA Set Registry junkies", Boston Red Sox Team Collectors, maybe Fisk Player collector, and throw-in that this card is a 1/1 out of around 250 graded.

I have no chance! But $737? (...That's over 10 times "SMR PSA 9" pricing!)

We've had this talk before and I will take a nice solid 9 for 65 bucks - if I can get it for that - and be very happy.

The 10 is for those that can/want to afford it and registry competition guys IMO.

With my failing eyes, the 9 in the holder looks scary good!

Then I will submit 100+ times and hope to get a 10!

    Agreed Stone,

I would rather have a bunch of 9s than one ten. When a ten is maybe double or triple SMR then maybe I would be interested. Like if I wanted some 10s for my set, say commons, that PSA 9 are at $24 SMR, I could get one at $75. Then I might actually by a couple for the set to get the rating up, but if my set is all 8s and 9s I will be just as satisfied.

BTW, if the 10 is my submission, I would be tempted to sell it so I can buy a mess of 9s.

This is definitely a tough call. I am attempting to collect Topps baseball all-stars from 1975 thru 1980 in PSA 9. Luckily, I have acuired a few 10s though. For some reason, I can't bring myself to sell any of these even though this would greatly aid my endeavor to acquire more 9s. For example, I have a 76 Topps Carew 400 in PSA 10(1/1). I just can not bring myself to sell it even though I realize that its value right now is likely as high as it's ever gonna get (especially relative to a PSA 9 in the same card). That being said, I would certainly not pay hundreds of dollars for a 1976 PSA 10 like the Fisk mentioned here since I think the value will slide. I have many cards in duplicate PSA 9 as well and I don't even want to sell those. Maybe I have OCD or something. image

I saw the Fisk too - my snipe didn't even register at $400. I was crazy to even entertain such a bid, on a card with absolute certainty not to be a 1/1 for long, but that is what you do in the heat of the moment. I am quite happy I lost this one!

BobbyBaker, do you have a scan of the 76 Carew? That is one of my favorites of all time. Congrats on the 1/1. You would make a mint selling it.

I do have a scan (though it obviously isn't the best in the world). Turn your PM function on and I will send the file to you.

That Carew PSA 10 is a special card! I have lots of PSA 10s in my #1 1976 Topps Set, only a couple that would come close to your Carew card.

#10 Lou Brock PSA 10 1/1 (out of 327 graded!)
#347 Ted Williams ATG PSA 10 1/2 (out of 318 graded!)
#592 Willie Randolph Rookie card PSA 10 1/2 (176 graded)

Other PSA 10s of merit in my set, that now have "more than a few" graded 10s are:

    #5 Seaver PSA 10 1/4 (147 graded)
    #95 Brooks Robinson PSA 10 1/10 (212 graded)
    #450 Jim Palmer PSA 10 1/9 (261 graded)
    #520 Willie McCovey PSA 10 1/13 (272 graded)

My point, you pay "super-high premiums" for PSA 10s (i.e., for: key rookies, star cards, key cards, etc.). And a few years later the "pop report" keeps on growing!

Take the Lou Brock with a population of 1, "I could create a bidding war", now take a look at the Seaver card, now with a population of 4 cards, the value may have shrunk a little!

So how high will someone (like me! image) go to buy a Lou Brock PSA 10 (1 out 327)? or how many "times PSA 9 value" would a Yankee team or player collector pay for a Willie Randolph Rookie Card PSA 10 (2 out of 176)? Or even a Ted Williams ATG PSA 10 (2 out of 318)?

PSA has created "created rarities" with the PSA Set Registry. Collecting by year, by Company, by Player, by Team, Master Player sets, and more!

Does tend to 'drive the price up' for "that special PSA 10", you desire for your set!

Sims actually had this card for sale on there site a few weeks ago for $400... I sure wish I bought it and then re-sold itimage

As I collect 75s and see what PSA 10s are going for, just for commons, I think to myself that the visual difference between the two grades does not merit me paying $175 for a common PSA 10 card, when I can get it in PSA 9 for $20 or less.

    Bob,
    Do you know how many 1976 Brock's I submitted , received 9's but never 1 -10? 88 Brocks 1-7, 9-8's and 78-9's. I barely get $20 for a 9 now.
  • StingrayStingray Posts: 8,843 ✭✭✭
I somehow find it hard to understand that out of 78 PSA 9s on the Brock, that one did not fit into the standards of a 10. Not questioning you gaspipe. Just seems like the "odds" of getting a 10 out of that many would be good.

Jackstraw, that story you know well my friend. All I can say is that there is a glimmer of hope buying raw on Ebay. I believe I paid a whopping $4.50 for the Carew. Jackstraw nearly beat me to it but passed (fortunately for me!) image
