That's a nice-looking Molly rookie. I can't see if it has the typical smudging around the "Rookie Shortstops." A GAI 8.5 is probably at least a PSA 8. The Murray is sharp too, probably PSA 8oc. As for the rest of the set, I'm not sure what an overall EX to NM 1978 set is worth. I guess it depends if the star cards are NM or better, or EX or worse.
Heck, I'm not even sure what a NM or NM-MT set is worth. SMR doesn't list a value for the set in any grade, but somebody else here probably knows what they go for. Did they have factory sets in '78? Anyway, if you're happy with $152, then it was a good deal.
Price-wise, you got a nice deal. I sold a few nice raw 78 sets in the last year that went for over $200 a set, with no graded cards included. I also agree that the Molly RC is maybe a PSA 8 (nice that it has no smudge), and hopefully there are a few other gems hidden in the set. Good luck with it!
Is it worth it to try and cross the Molly over to PSA or to keep as is? I have a Molly that I need to resubmit that was directly from vending that they tagged as trimmed however they graded the 40+ others that came from that box. That being said, I don't think I may need this Molly for my set and hence is it worth it to try and cross it to PSA if I am going to sell it. If it gets a 9 then obviously it is worth the cross, but for resale is a PSA 8 or a GAI 8.5 better?
And I am hoping for some hidden gems too! The Rose, Carlton and Bench all appear to have good centering so I am hoping for some nice corners too!
I was figuring that I don't need the Molly and could possibly get $100+ for it. So for $50 I got a 1978 set with out the Molly to dig through for other gradables I need.
If you do cross the Molitor, you have to crack it out. It has zero chance of getting bumped to a 9 while being graded inside the GAI holder. If it's as sharp as it appears from the pic, worse case scenario is a PSA 8 and just maybe you'll hit the jackpot.
Zef Overall - I think you did great! It's the kind of set one puts in a binder and takes out and looks at from time to time.
Plus, ya can always upgrade it from the leftovers from the board here!
Congratulations! And good luck on the cross over - and I agree with JR - if you don't crack it out, it will probably get rejected for some reason - probably having to do with the rotation of the planets around the sun or something.

But seriously, good buy.

jrdolan, I have never seen a 1978 factory set. I believe the answer to your question is no.
