Regrade: Have you tried it?

Have any members had any luck with sending cards to PSA for a "regrade"?

The reason I ask is I received my free sub voucher for reaching 75% on one of my sets but I don't have any raw cards to submit. The voucher is good for crossovers and regrades also as long as the cards are from that set. So, regrade comes to the fore as I have a few 8's in my set which look as good as the 9's.

I ask you to share you "regrading" experience in this thread because I hesitate to try it. The reason why, it seems to me PSA would be admitting to grading the card wrong the first time through if they bump it up on the regrade attempt. Plus I would be livid if an 8 came back as a 7.

What do you think? How did you do?

  • Bob,
I always hear those stories where the grade goes up two or three, I always get the same grade as before I cracked from a PSA holder. Now the pop goes up and my "5" is worth less. I have several that I want to crack out of PSA holders, but I am always worried about damage cracking them out or the in-between shipping and handling.

  • Bob,

I've sent in crossovers with little success (too many evidence of trimming) and decided regrades wouldn't fare any better, as far as yielding a higher grade. I have cracked highend cards that I had duplicates of and had a little success at higher grades. Of course, there is always the chance of getting a lower grade too. I would say my regrades are about 10% higher grades, less than 5% lower grades, and the rest, around 85%, the same grade. That might seem a little high but I only send in what I think are highend cards so I think PSA does a great job grading my cards with consistancy. Good luck with your submissions.

  • Some collectors my believe a 10% increase in grade is not worth the money, it does get costly, but most of what I'm collecting are vintage cards with low populations and none or few higher than what I currently have. I've read other collectors having luck at multiple grade jumps, but I've never had one grade better, or worse than one grade from the original.

I once sent in a card that I just knew was a grade higher than it had been graded and it came back one grade lower. Unfortunately, I did not have another of equal grade and never imagined it would grade lower. That was the first and last time I will ever crack and send a card in that I don't have a duplicate in grade. Yes, I recently resubmitted the card in hopes of at least getting the card back with the original grade. The submission hasn't been graded yet so I can only hope.

  • From my extremely limited experience, I'd recommend cracking them rather than regrade.

With one of my free five submissions, I cracked a high-end Maris 7, and it came back an 8.

Asking PSA to knowingly bump a PSA 8 (or anybody's 8) to PSA 9 is the same as giving them the grading fee and saying, "Here, take your girlfriend to the movies." Not to mention the shipping and insurance both ways. Your card gets to travel around the good ol' USA, but that's about it.

  • I cracked out a blazing 1954 Willie mays that was initially graded a Psa 7. I felt the card had strong Psa 8 qualities so I figured I would send it in a second time and try my luck. To my surprise the card came back Evidence of trimming. I cracked the card out a second time for regrading and to my relief I was able to get a Psa 7 on it. If only I could have registered frequest flyer mileage on that card.

Thick set of plyers, tiny flat screw drivers should be all you need to crack PSA

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • I cracked a high end PSA 9 Jordan that looked to be perfect in every conceivable way. The first time it came back as a PSA 8 PD. The second time it came back as a PSA 6. I will try once more. Go figure!
