our 7 year old is on the local 7 and 8 year old All Star team. He's a pretty darn good hitter for his size. He just needs to work on his fielding.

What's odd is....if we play him in the outfield and a pop up is hit....he won't catch it. ...............if he plays infield......he catches them and fields Much better.

You think it's a "scared of the ball" type thing?

also....
how on earth can you help along the learning of catching a ball overhead and with your hand/glove extended up, open, and above your head??

I've suggested to him to just go outside in the drive and toss the ball up a few feet and only catch it with his glove over his head like he is waving....

our one coach says it is a difficult thing to teach but rather the yoots will just all of sudden begin doing it. A ball to the face off an outstretched open mitt probably helps too.

  • Try teaching him to use his belly-button as a frame of reference during a game of soft-toss catch.

If the ball is coming into him above his belly-button, he should catch the ball with the fingers of his glove pointed up.

If the ball is below his navel, the fingers of his glove should be pointing down.

Keep stressing that point on each and every toss ....maybe it'll work.

As far as the infield/outfield thing.....I had the same problem as a kid.....always had trouble judging the ball of the bat if I was playing outfield, but no such problem if I was playing the infield. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever got over that one!
