K, what's the deal with SSPC?

I'm browsing around eBay, looking for something interesting, and I come across these 1975 SSPC baseball cards.

I know nothing about this set. HOF'ers seem to sell for dirt cheap, even in PSA 10, and I notice the PSA pop report shows a high percentage of 9's and 10's. Insights, please!

Dunno why people don't want 'em, but they don't. Like most of the 1976-77 discs, you can get a PSA 10 of just about any player for the cost of grading.

A young Keith Olbermann wrote the copy on the back, FYI - they read pretty well. I think that kid has a future.

That set was only sold as a set. It was made in 75 release in 76, but I heard/read that thise set was actually reproduced/reprinted years later and that reprints are almost impossible to distinguish from the real ones.

Added: I had bought the Tiger's team set just to get a taset of these cards. Not that impressed, photos are very bland and dull looking. It was like going back and looking at some of those 81 Donruss photos.

Here is what the 2005 SCD Catalog says:

"This set, produced by the Sport Star Publishing Company in 1975 as a collectors' issue (though not actually issued until 1976), was withdrawn from the market because of legal entanglements. Because SSPC agreed never to reprint the issue, some collectors feel it has an air of legitimacy. [Stuff about what the cards look like] Sets originally sold for $9.99."

Personally, I've never looked at them as a legit issue. Didn't buy them then, won't buy them now.

Pretty sure that set was unlicensed, hence the distaste people have for it.

Me? I always preferred SSPC's HOF set instead.
