1985 Donruss Rack Case Break! SCANS

My case came today and it was in great shape. I was a little suprised that all 72 racks were loose in the case and it was not a 3 box case. No difference however. I opened the box and there was a rack with Puckett sitting on the top. Sweet, but o/c t/b 75/25. I then started busting and didn't stop until about five minutes ago. On the fifth or sixth rack I got my first Clemens!

image

Natrually I was happy it was early in the break and already got a clemens, but as you can see the centering is not so hot. I had CDsNuts words ringing through my head and stopped for a minute and was going to sell off the rest of the packs. And then I said screw it!

I kept ripping and ripping and got lots of nice cards but no more Clemens. I was getting mad, worried, nauseous, and angry with about 20/72 racks to go I only got 1 Clemens.

I then hit the jackpot!!!

2 of the next 3 packs had Clemens and the first was centered nice

image

and then the second was centered better!

image

2 packs to go and I got another, although not so hot of cenetering

image

I will post some more later, I got several gradable Ryans, Roses and Orels!

So what do you think so far?

    Is it worth the $500?

    I think you did well.

Seems worth it to me - that's a lot of ripping for $500! I always look at the stuff like this that I buy as entertainment - you can't expect to make any money at it, but every now and then you might add a nice card to your collection. Good luck on the grading!

How did the Pucketts turn out?

So much fun! I was worried when I had one Clemens with 20 packs to go, but it came out well.

As far as all 72 packs coming in one case, I have learned that's how Donruss did it in 85...they had no rack boxes just a rack case.

softparade, to tell you the truth, I think I would rather have done a 78 wax box...at least then you can marvel the commons that look sweet even if the stars don't pop up. I actually pulled one card out that is not a star, but it was the card that was glowing! It was screaming to me "I AM GEM MINT! PULL ME OUT!" A Ron Guidry, not a bad pitcher(actually an awesome pitcher but not a star card). But I saw this card and my knees shook. It looked perfect!
    image

As far as the Puckett's: I pulled 4 and they were all o/c t/b.

    image

But the Ryans I pulled are to die for! All four of them are almost 50/50(maybe 60/40 t/b but don't tell anyone)

    image

And I know that Orel was highly touted and actually had a great career, but not the HOF career many were thinking. I got 6 of his rc's and here are 4 that are pretty sweet too!

    image

All in all it was really fun! I also have 3 Boggs, 5 Gwynns, 5 Carews, 5 Bretts, 3 Rickey's, 10 Rose's(he had 2 cards), 3 Schmidts, 3 Molitors, and 1 Gary Carter that are grading worthy.

I had drinks wth a buddy tonight which is why I didn't post all of this earlier. I(like the 12 year old that I can be) told him about my purchase which he did not understand. He asked me, "Couldn't you have gotten the case cheaper from somewhere else?"

I told him that I probably could have. Followed by, "But if you truely want the best, you gotta buy from the best."

I could not be more pleased with the condition of this case or the communication and quality of the transaction. BBCE is the best and this was only my 2nd purchase from them. I am sure that there are others out ther you can trust, but I can attest that Steve Hart is on that SAFE list.

    Congrats zef,
Looks like your experience with these was a lot better than mine. Maybe you got a few different print runs which would explain why the first and the fourth Clemens have the same bad centering, but the second and third have the same great centering. I bet your glad you didn't take my advice. The Guidry looks like a 10 also- I think that would generate interest from Yankee collectors. Nice pulls all around.

Yes, those were the only 2 I sent in for now. I mailed them off and got back from the post office and then found out of the monthly special INCLUDED star cards.

I was eager to get them off so I did th $12 -5 day

I believe it was the 3rd one that got the 10. I sent in the 2nd and 3rd scanned and the second had a slight rough edge on the lower right side.

    Stone-

I am not sure. I want to see how the others grade and if I have a 9 in all the cards I sent in(as most were more than one of each card) I may just keep one of each of the 9's in a high grade set, and sell off the rest. I have never been that big of a fan of 10's in so much as I would be fine with a 9 at a 10th of the price. Or in this case, selling the 10, covering the cost of the case and still having a high grade set. Don't know though.

  • Damn! Nice cards! I wish you would have sent in the others with the Clemens. Likely the grades would have been the same. Not saying they're are overgraded, those are sweeeeet cards, especially from racks! Just matters getting the right grader on the right day, not to have the cards undergraded. Sometimes the wrong graded on the wrong day can be a ball buster.

    Zep,

I agree, to what you say about 10s, to me they are like 1 of 1 cards, it is hard to place a real value on them and for me the price of common PSA 10s in 1975 are easily $150++. I can at least 10 PSA 9 commons for that price. That is not even getting into what star cards in PSA 10 go for. JMO.

  • Congrats on pulling some great cards. I am new to collecting PSA cards (recently bought my first one--1969 PSA 6 Joe Nammath) and was wondering if you can detect any difference between the 9 and the 10 Clemens cards?
Also why does PSA not assign a centering grade or numbers to each card rather than giving you the choice of "qualifers" or not.
When I first started looking for PSA cards to buy it confused me greatly why an obivious OC card was not marked as such.
I really enjoy reading this forum and have learned a lot about E-bay rippoffs, fakes and collecting terminoligy(SP-5).
    Respectfully,

First of all, AMBRO image! Mid-post is usually not a great first post spot especiaslly if you ask a question. And in this instance, yes I can tell a diff between the 9 and 10. This 9 has a bit of fuzz, about a half inch, 2/3s the way down the right edge. A lot of times, the diff between a 9 and a 10 is negligable. As far as them not assigning subgrades, its just what they do. And from the looks of track record with the companies that do the subs, the top 2-3 IMO, do not break it down.

Now, for the reason of my post.

I have decided to list the PSA 10 Clemens and I usually do not spam, but I feel that it has been talked about and the break has had a bit of a following, so I thoughgt posting it would be well recieved. I will keep you posted on how the other grades turn out.

Funny. Thats what I thought. Until 2 days into my 7 day auction and DSL undercuts me by listing a half hour earlier than me on a 5 day and takes the winning bidder of his card out of my bidding pool thereby lowering my final price. It pissed me off so I thought I would share.

Either way this one card nearly covered the case of the case so I can't complain. But I don't like being undercut by a big dealer and I will NEVER buy from him again.

ldferg...I hope you are wrong on the 8 guess. I am pretty sure that I will get a 9. This is the break down they will give me:

    Centering: 9
    Corners: 9.5
    Edges: 8.5
    Surface: 9.5

I think that unlike PSA they dock big for edges being fuzzy. I may get an 8 for edges and that would mean the highest I could get would be an 8.5 overall despite what the rest of the grades are.

Bummer. Does a BGS 8.5 get about the same money as a PSA 9? Sucks you're into it for another $20, but it was probably worth the gamble.
  • zef204zef204 Posts: 4,742 ✭✭
I don't think so. 8.5's often get overlooked and sell for closer to 8's IMO. I had a Molitor 8.5 that sold for almos the same as a PSA 8.

I wanted to give it a try as everyone is certain here how lax Beckett has gotten on their grading. Yet the were tougher than PSA on this one example. I have never had good results from Beckett and I wonder if they favor their big submitters as most of mine have been under 20 cards. This also was my first sub to them in over 3 years and I have the same feelings about them. I am done with Beckett.

zef, sorry about the luck on this one. i've had one bgs 9.5 out of all my subs (less than 30). all of them have been modern subs as well, nothing earlier than 95 (with the exception of an 87f jordan). i'm partial to psa for some reason, even on the modern stuff, but it does appear that 9.5's and 10s by bgs seem to command more than some of the modern 10s by psa.
