Attending Shows Early?

I know that there are some graded card dealers who are admitted to shows before the public, where they will then look for cards in gradeable condition (or, in some cases, cards that can be easily improved into gradeable condition).
Does anybody know what the deal is with that? If you're not setting up yourself, how does one get admitted to a show early? Is it just because they've shown they'll drop a lot of cash or is there some kind of special admittance fee?

I know there are certain conventions that sell VIP passes, which allow ticket buyers to wander the card shows the night before the official opening. Is that what you're talking about? I don't think the VIP passes are restricted to dealers.
Also, I would imagine during the set up process for the show itself, many dealers just wander around anyway to see what's out there before the rest of the public can get a crack at the goodies.

Yep. I guess the few times I've gone to shows I didn't notice that being offered. I just heard the dealers talking about some people who attended earlier and scoped their tables for gradeable cards. A shop owner in Las Vegas also posted a few threads about a couple of those guys last year.
This is not a new development at all, it goes on at almost every major show. At the Fort, for example, the general public cannot enter until 5pm, but those with a dealer badge (not necessarily a dealer at the show) can enter around noon. Those guys sweep a lot of the quality, gradeable raw cards away, before most of us ever get to see them.
