SSN on Checks??

A little off-topic but just curious if others have seen this. I just got a check as payment for an Ebay auction and both the husband and wife's names and SSNs were printed on the check. I found this very bizarre....

Post it here to teach them a lesson. I bet it also had their Bank Acct #. Better post that too for good measure.

Don't forget their address and phone number!

I guess they want to avoid the hassle of printing their SSN or DL whenever they write a check. So many people don't trust check cards and still write checks for groceries, etc. Don't you just want to pummel them when you're behind them in line?
  • I used to work cust. service at a hunting/outdoor store, and I'd see that all the time when people wrote checks. I believe (in GA at least) that your driver's license # was your SSN some time ago, but for obvious reasons (WTF does driving have to do with SS?!), they were forced to issue new #'s. However, some people actually wanted to keep it, and worse yet, some even get it printed on their checks...

For those of you not in the investigative side, some states also use that as your Drivers License number . I wish those states would stop that practice because of comments like those prior to mine.

People in the military routinely printed their SS# on their checks so they wouldn't have to put it on the back when cashing a check on base. The SS# for a service member is their ID number.

This practice, since ID theft prevalence, is on the drop - we no longer do it.

  • I worked in check processing for several years and plenty of people list their SSNs and/or driver's licence #s. The trend is lessening but not quickly enough.

While I was working in Charlotte there were some problems with employees taking cancelled checks of Hornets player's checks. I saw a number of memos reminding employees that old checks were to be distroyed with no exceptions. I guess that would have been a good way of getting player's signatures, especially with the new trend of cut signatures.
