"The all-new trading card series will chronicle the world's most significant news stories of 2005 and is only available online.

Every Monday, starting January 3rd, collectors will have the opportunity to purchase a new trading card depicting the week's biggest news story. Past weeks cards will remain available for purchase until sold out. "

So they should only put happy happy joy joy cards out?

Should the war time cards that depicted the horror of ww2 and hitler have been denied? (I can't remember the exact set, but it was a series of cards that was issued as essentially propoganda).

I see no harm in it. Discussing world events and bringing attention to them especially by those who may not care otherwise (youth, for example) is always a good thing.

  • If i wanted to learn about it I would read about it on MSNBC or CNN... For topps to put out a card about these issues is sick and to pad their bottom line is even worse. Just my 2 cents.

The Terry Shiavo card was rock bottom for topps....the only thing more depressing is that there are boneheads out there
    who are buying these cards!

So MSNBC and CNN aren't profiting on the same types of disasters?

And what about the youth? How much headline news do you think they are watching?
  • I am toooo old to buy green fruit, but 40-years from now the subject cards will have value.
In the meantime, they might get a few young folks interested in "current events."

Horrors of War, Civil War News, Red Menace were all "useful" cards that dealt with "real life."
It does not trouble me when a company makes money by producing potentially "educational"
cards. I am troubled about violent video games that make companies rich and may result in
sundry mayhem against cops and ordinary citizens.

As someone who makes his living responding to large scale disasters, spending months in the effected area and seeing the toll it takes on the victims, I do not refuse Topps the right to make these cards.

My most trying assignment was a 24 day tour in NYC after September 11 working at a secure site that was not well known because of the work being done there. Every day I worked with NYPD and NYFD men and women, each of them with their own story about losing good friends. It was the most rewarding assignment but one that also took it's toll on me and almost made me find another profession. The sights, sounds, and smells from that place live with me to this day.

Topps can make the cards and the comparisons to other possibly offensive series are true.

The idea that some kids may become interested in current events because of the cards is also valid.

We can choose to buy or not. I will not buy them.

Some who are truly offended would refuse to buy Topps products at all.

I will continue to buy Topps since I beleive they have the right to market these cards.
  • At least you can get a Carrie Underwood card out of the deal. imageimage

I have no problem with this sort of thing. Its better than a set of serial killers or of airplane disasters or the like.

Taken from the Topps website on this card.....

Topps Chronicles cards document the most significant events occurring around the world each week. Unfortunately, at times, these events may be tragic in nature. Given the tragic nature of last week's event in London, Topps is donating 100% of the proceeds earned from the sale of this card to the London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund. This fund has been established in association with the British Red Cross to raise money for the victims and their families.

I think this puts better perspective on the subject. If true, then image to Topps!

People still believe that video games cause people to be violent? If they do then what about plain ole' television or movies for that matter. Trading cards depicting war is historical but it depicts as much violence as video games and video games at least aren't real.

I bet you still think all the school shootings are the fault of the PC game "Doom".
  • "Horrors of War, Civil War News, Red Menace were all "useful" cards that dealt with "real life.""

And dont forget how they profited off of the Mars Attacks as well. image
