Beat up Mantle

This Mantle has 16 bids on it and is up to $1,237 already. I don't consider myself a snob collector, but if I can't afford a decent example of a card, I just don't buy it. Look at it! It is rough. Do others share my viewpoint about at least wanting to have reasonably nice cards in their collection and not buying something as beat to heck as this?

While the scan is tiny, I think the card presents rather well for the grade. It doesn't appear to have any major creases, so I don't think the card is *that* bad. I'd much rather have corner wear than creases.

    Link to 52 Mantle auction

I also saw this one as I'm looking to upgrade my 52 Mantle. And since I don't own a 52 Mantle, anything would be an upgrade - LOL.

This one was interesting but just a feeling it might have water damage. Water damage whereby the card gets that mottled type look. Very tough to spot this on a scan. This would be unacceptable to me, yes even on a 52 Mantle. If it's not water damaged, that's not a bad card for a 1.

Not to hijack the thread, and I know it's not a PSA graded card, but no doubt PSA would probably give this 52 Mantle a 1. I think PSA gets it right in their grading standards for 2 through 10. And 1 is right also except there should be some quick clarification on the slab header as to why the 1 such as water damage, pin hole, tear, paper loss, etc. PSA surely knows about Ebay (LOL) and how collectors must buy cards from scans and a quick reason for giving a card a 1, I think would be helpful.

My only probem with this auction is the fact that this seller has never sold anything before. taking paypal helps. the fact that she/ he has never sold anything b4 could get the winner a deal.
I would proceed with caution though.

    Good for you.
  • Why not buy this one a lot cheaper?

52 Mantle **(it MAY be a reprint, I am not exactly sure!)

Beat up or not I would love to have this card in my collection.. If I had 1-2grand to do nothing better with but couldn't aford better.. and if the seller had more positive feedback I would bid.

  • I was considering listing my 52 Mantle to Ebay. It is graded BVG 1.5. How much do you think that would go for?

Here is the definition of what Someother Grading Company defines as a 10.....

10 POOR 1: This card usually exhibits many of these characteristics: heavy print spots, heavy crease(s), pinhole(s), color or focus imperfections or discoloration, surface scuffing or tears, rounded and/or fraying corners, ink or pencil marking(s), and lack of all or some original gloss, small portions of the card may be missing.

Actually if you look carefully there appears to be a major crease cutting across the top right, going through the logo on the hat.

  • cards graded a "1" can have a wide range of eye appeal.

on this card, I'd guess 2K.

the worst "1" i've seen was a gai 1, and the majority of the back was missing - it sold for $1,425

as for the PSA 1 that sold for $3,000, that is a very high price, which is why the seller is quoting that. i believe that is the highest a psa 1 mantle has ever sold for.

There are some cards that I'd never be able to afford in mid-high grade.

If I had a few extra thousand lying around, I'd buy a PSA1 52 Mantle.

Why would you want to beat up an American sports hero?
