Insane Exquisite Prices

I can't believe how many $1000+ cards this year are being pulled and sold. Who the hell has this kind of money to waste on cards?
I saw that the Lebron/Carmelo 1/1 auto/logo sold for 12,000+
If I had that kind of money to burn, it definitely wouldn't be on sports cards, modern or vintage.
Really, the only people who buy these expensive packs are looking to resell the contents. That's the only reason I bought a pack, because I knew there were insane collectors that will pay a mint for certain cards.
Sad thing this year is that you aren't guaranteed a "Case Card" Some collectors lost $500+ after reselling their case pulls. I've read some horrible breaks, including 2 base cards per pack.

Just a terrible waste of money. And I do mean waste. Anytime you're paying $800 for something, and can only expect to get $300 worth of product back from that, you're pissing $500 away. I don't care that you 'might have a chance at a big card'.
Put $500 in a college fund for your kids, or send it to feed starving children in Asia. But I cannot for the life of me understand why you would squander that kind of money on a pack of basketball cards.
Any time you buy a pack/box of cards it is a gamble/waste. Whether you buy 6 $100+ boxes or one single pack for the same price.
Out of those 6 boxes you chances are worse of making your money back than the single pack. On average the pack should bring in at least 35% of what you paid, and the boxes unless you sell all the commons/singles a lot of times bring in much less.
I gamble a lot. And I do mean a lot. I don't work, and 10 hrs. a day are spent in front of the computer, either getting down on sporting events or playing poker. Which is why this just baffles me-- if you must gamble, then for God's sake---- at least do something where you've got a sailor's chance of winning. Hit the dice pit at the local casino, or whoop it up on some 9/6 jacks or better. But DON'T play a game where the house edge is 75% or so. You get better odds than that playing the scratch offs at the local convenience store.
