Baseball and Softball Dropped By The Olympic Committee

Another example of world-wide anit-Americanism as both sports were routinely dominated by the USA.......the International Olympic Committee announced yesterday that both baseball and softball would not be on the menu for the 2012 Olympics in London.

  • I think the dropping of baseball hurts other countries (Cuba, etc.) far worse than it hurts the USA.

Frankly, I could care less about either being dropped and cant come up with a single reason to even be upset about it. Its a big so what to me.

I have no problem with the Olympics only focusing on the sports that nobody cares about 3 out of every 4 years.

Would you have a problem had they dropped a sport that another country dominated as thoroughly as the USA dominated softball?

I have no problem with it, really. If removing them raises focus and awareness of other sports, there's no real harm in it.

See spammy, the olympics aren't an AMERICAN sport, they are for worldwide competition.

Is softball really needed as an olympic sport? Or was it something we embraced because it bolstered our gold medal count?

Baseball the same way...I don't really see that as an olympic sport. Yes it enjoys a following here, but is it Olympic? I don't think so.

Why drop the sport? USA did not even qualify the last time, so its not like we dominated it. Japan, Taiwan, Cuba and the Dominican republic have some very good teams. What was the reasoning behind it? Money? Stadiums?

I'm thinking they probably did it for the overall health of the olympic games.

Kind of like how a salary cap in baseball would be bad for a couple of teams (yankees, red sox) but would be a good thing for all of baseball, removing these sports is bad for a few countries, but returns the games to its roots and is overall a good thing for the olympics.
