Question on Italian 1861 M 5 centesimi coin

Isn't this coin supposed to be copper? Were they made in CN or silver. I have one that isn't copper color. Looks more like CN or silver. image

  • It's may have had a silver wash. They were all copper as far as I know. You could dare to try a razor blade type cut to the rim to see if brown shows through.

    What's the condition? I thought silver wash too, and I recall seeing one like this recently (poorly done at that), but silver washing doesn't survive much circulation. Of course, it could have been done on an already circulated coin. Might try a scratch like Brad said. BTW, the Milan mint is terribly common, so defacements are as well.

    I know absolutely nothing about Italian patterns, or even if they exist, but being the first year of the Kingdom that remains a possibility...
