normally a big 'ole "hell no!" would pop up, but i'm not sure. the cert checks out, and we have reason to believe he has the card as the scan backgrouind color is odd, and the note.
a big test that i've always used is ask the guy to scan it on top of a newspaper with a few coins on top of the card - that either proves they have the card or they're a helluva photoshop master...
I agree that the scan and the note seem to argue against it being stolen auction images or something. If it's a scam, it's not your run-of-the mill variety.
But what kind of person, who knows about card values and grading, trots this card out with a silly-low minimum and no reserve on his very first day on eBay? The pop report shows only one 8oc in existence between the two variations, with 3 unqualified 8's and no 9's.
I dunno, this seems like the kind of treasure that would be listed in a Mastro or Edwards auction for $50K or more, not by a day-old eBayer with a $1,000 minimum. I wonder how this will progress....

I hear that, the sad part is that regardless of the validity of the auction someone will get shafted. Whether it's the seller getting pennies due to lack of feedback, etc. or the buyer if it's a scam.
No question that he is NOT a new ebayer. Not even close. Much too well worded and set up for that. Also, new ebayers virtually always keep their auctions at the seven day setting. This guy switched to five days.
<< <i>I'm 99% sure I saw that card up on eBay before. I remember the sticker on the back detailing the L-R centering. 10 bucks says the scans are stolen. >>
I too remember the card being on eBay a while back. The sticker on the back gave it away.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

OK, assuming an experienced eBayer, the choice of a brand-new ID for this sale is scary. Makes me think it's a hit-and-run. Also suspicious is that deliberately selling with zero feedback indicates that he doesn't care whether it gets close to market value (because he doesn't have the card and ANY amount is gravy). Not to mention that some of you guys remember the scan. Just another con job, after all. (insert "sigh" icon here).
Well, at least he didn't bother making up a story about where he got it.
Since this is the only 8oc Ruth rookie, anybody know which deep-pockets collector owns it? That person could get the scam killed. I know Candiotti owns one of the three unqualified 8's.

I don't think the "scammer stories" work as well for the scammers like they used to. I expect experienced scammers such as this vermin will constantly experiment and try new scamming tactics.
I just emailed this guy and asked him for a scan with a recent newspaper behind the card, he emailed me back .QUOTE:Hello i can but i don`t do that i put the pic and i don`t think put anothers pic
What do you think of that. we need more guys to email him asking for pic.

Are these scammers even the same SPECIES we are? "Hello i can but i don`t do that i put the pic and i don`t think put anothers pic"
Does he really thing someone getting this reply will spend $1000+? I wouldn't spend $5 for a common if I got that email message. Jeez!
Oh yeah, after reading his incoherent, illiterate reply to the question, I'm more convinced than ever that he owns one of the most valuable cards in existence. That can't be his own description in the auction; he copied it from somewhere.

My dad sold snake oil at farmer's markets during the 30's - he also pitched different kinds of "fake" stain removers. When I was in high school, I spent summers with him - he had a traveling auction that was really a kind "story" where he "convinced" people that they were getting something for nothing. Yeah, right! He had a 6th grade education and did what he had to...to make a living. I've got to say - the guy was colorful.
I sent him a ebay message, requesting that he "re-scans" this card on top of a current newspaper with the date showing. I told him that it is possible that the scan is a scan that seemed to have been used on ebay, and more than one ebay member remembers seeing a simular label on the reverse of the holder. I told him if doesn't comply. I, and possibly others will report our suspicions to ebay.

edit: maybe that will be enough to get him to end auction?
I'm sure others of you tried to search for a completed eBay auction for "1915 M101-5 SPORTING NEWS BABE RUTH PSA 8" like I just did. Came up empty...could be on another auction site. I just swim in the 'Bay so I limiited my search for bait there...
Isn't this card supposed to be labeled "blank back"? Regardless, I think this card was talked about on another thread and I too remember that sticker on the back. Seems very familar. Pop says only 1 for 8 OC for regular and non for blank back. It's a 1/1.
Maybe he was the one that bought the card originally and doesn't have a scanner so he decided to use the original pictures
Yeah, odd that three eBayers who have been idle since 2001 all sprang to life within minutes of each other on the same day four years later to bid on the same card. Nice catch, cdchanger.
"Sleepers" is right -- this guy has been saving these IDs for a long time to bid up the price on the big score! I wonder if he has different ones lined up for the next scam? It will be interesting to see what these IDs bid on after this scam is over. Maybe we can track this bad boy by following his shills, even after he dumps this zero-FB selling account.
But the good thing about this is that no real bidders are being fooled, even newbies, which is encouraging. And the scammer will be out some fees if he sells to himself for several thousand dollars. The higher he shills, the more he pays. As long as some innocent bystander doesn't snipe in at the end. If that happens we'll have to warn the poor bugger before he puts an MO in the mail.
I'm not sure about that. The guys remember the distinctive yellow background and the note on the reverse scan. This auction has neither. Plus the scam auction is for an 8oc, the one you linked to is an unqualified 8.
Wherever the pics came from, the important thing is eBay pulled the plug on the scam ... but I bet it was for shilling rather than the scam itself.
NO KIDDING!!! IT IS THE AUCTION THAT SOME OF YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD SEEN ON EBAY RECENTLY. WHICH WAS TALKED ABOUT IN THIS THREAD
Wasn't the card in which the topic of this thread an 8 OC? the Sothebys one is not. The 8 oc one in which this guy was trying to peddle I belive ewas in the REA Auction?

Check the feedback dates.
There is no telling how many such "cells" are out there
waiting to be called into action by their leader.

That's funny. Didn't see that. No activity for 5 yrs on all of them.
Somewhere in between Orlando and Deltona, Florida (about an hour Southwest of Daytona Beach)
Looked up houses for sale in Oviedo, Florida and all five the house that came up were all just under 100K
What does it all mean?
I don't know!

P.S. Maybe this Ruth card will suffer hurricane Dennis water damage?
