Submissions LOST By Fed Ex!!!

I sadly report that a box of two submissions, shipped by me with Fed Ex was lost in Anaheim on it's way to PSA.. One submission was 26 cards--- the $5 special--- all commons,, Mint+++ to be graded then added to my registries. The other submission was a 1956 Topps Harmon Killebrew, EXMT, using a submission voucher sent to me to make up for a previous "Mechanical Error" by PSA---- can't win!! Anyway, I've done a claim with Fed Ex, canx't my Master Card--- since the CC info was in there.. Nightmare!!! Don't ship Fed Ex Ground blindly believing that nothing can go wrong... How does everyone else ship? Is USPS registered the way to go? Down but not out-- Tony

registered mail is the way to go. it has to be signed and is locked away every step of the way.

    sorry that happened to you.

    Heinous!

I usually go insured priority, unless big $ cards - then registered.

Will try insured priority. PSA allows this method, I assume- thanks- Tony

  • Oh Crap!! This is my worst nightmare!! Sorry to hear this is happening to you!! I usually ship priority mail with insurance which can be traced for delivery.. Registered mail is the most secure for high dollar cards since it is stored under lock and key and signed for wherever it's at!! It costs more but the security of knowing your stuff is not going to get lost is worth it-especially for high price items. Paul

I'm convinced FedEx is one of the worst organizations around. Recently I had a Fed-Ex delivery man leave a package from Robert Edwards Auctions worth $8000 in plain view leaning against my front door when I wasn't home. I requested the cards to be sent via USPS (vacation hold for pickup at the post office), called REA and to my surprise found out that the package was delivered two days earlier by Fed-Ex. I was one thousand miles away for my regular job and called my dad to drive twenty miles across town and check if it was still there. Luckily it was. I was a mess during that thirty minutes waiting for my pops to call back. Fed-Ex didn't even put it behind the screen door. So, I always request USPS because of this example and similar problems encountered in the past.

In ten years I have never lost a package with the USPS. Registered or insured mail is the always the way to go. The USPS deserves a pat on the back. I'm a very happy customer.

Sorry to hear about the lost package. I hope its found - good luck.

rustywilly, I had a similar experience sending some important legal documents recently. Even though I did not authorize waiver of signature, FedEx left the envelope on the recipient's doorstep anyway.
  • Sorry to hear that, that scares me too since they may only value your cards at what you paid for them - not what you could sell them for after they've been graded.

USPS isn't much better, they're batting about .920 with me - I just had to go to the PO today to file a claim for a stolen package...

I always get worried about the USPS, UPS, Fedex, DHL or whoever leaving stuff at the door. It's scary!!! Some idiot can just walk up and grab your stuff. I think the Postal Service is best. Maybe you should get a PO BOX. I have done that, it's good for the Postal Service items, but sucks when someone wants to send me something UPS ground. At least it's not on your door.

As Fedex losing someone's items, that's crazy. Didnt' they just lose about 40,000 people's credit history in the mail too??? Must be the smurfs.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I'll also add that UPS is as bad. I had a $400 pack left at the side of my house by UPS. I wrote GAI to ask for a status update after a pack I submitted hadn't been received after two months. They responded by confirming the pack was shipped a month earlier. I checked on the side of my house I rarely ever inspect and, low and behold, there it was. It was rained on and sat in the sun for 30 days but it was fortunately still in decent shape. I can't understand how they can leave valuable merchendise out in the elements without so much as a simple note to alert the recipient that the shipment was left behind.

DON'T USE FEDEX!!! Check out the link in my sig line. You are covered for only $500 on ANY sports collectible.

USPS is the only way to go, why do you think PSA uses them?
  • Ill second Gemint's comments. I had a $700 package left behind bushes for three days in 15 degree weather in January before I happened to see it out of the corner of my eye. That was from UPS. I will avoid them at all costs.

I recently thought I had a USPS registered package lost as it took 7 business days to travel 90 miles. And I felt no better when the first call to the post office resulted in the customer service rep explaining how I could file for the insurance cost. But, lo and behold, it was delivered the next day. It would have been a huge loss.

I use USPS priority mail with insurance and delivery confirmation if value is > $100.

USPS registered mail with insurance if value >$2000 (cheaper and more secure than the first).

Both are traceable, and insured in case of loss.

bxb, I believe the break even point with priority insured vs. registered insured is about $700-$800 value wise. The insurance is cheaper on a registered package. After $800 registered with insurance is cheaper. You can check with your PO or use the calculator on USPS.com. It may save you a few $$ in the long run.

Thanks for all the input--- I guess as a new guy, I got sucked in to thinking Fed EX or USPS Registered were the only methods--- when I read the back of the Submission Form,, I am led to those and nothing else.. Rigistered is a pain because of the packing requirements, none of the local packaging services even know what that is. The brown paper & special paper tape are tough .. The Priority/ insured makes sense to a certain level of value.. There's probably a max insurable amount.. Good luck fellow registry friends-- Tony

No offense meant here, and I'm sorry this has happened to you,
but I gotta say that playing the dollar game on sending submissions is is being dollar foolish.
PSA recommends registered coming and going - if it's worth sending in, it's worth sending in the right way.
I'm nervous enough shipping my cards out in a box - I've always used registered and I always will.

Too bad you didn't see an earlier thread regarding FedEx and alternate methods.
FedEx is the most bumbling, incompetent shipping outfit in existence.
I wouldn't give them the time of day - they'd lose it and we'd be plunged into darkness.

  • It is true they say they dont pay for collectibles over $500. However if you used one of the shipping outlets for fed ex like the local we mail for you store or something similar and they excepted your insurance for over $500 they should pay you. my lawyer filed a lawsuit about 7 or 8 years ago when this happened to me with a mint 1958 Maris Rookie. I was positive it was at least a 9 and I insured it for $2000, it may have been $2500. Fedex tried to deny the claim. My lawyer shot back that there agent accepted the payment and as an agent of theirs they had to pay up. It was even disclosed on some form that it was a baseball card. So they begrudgingly paid up and we dropped the lawsuit. Lucky my lawyer is a family friend so it didnt cost me anything. I have not used fed ex since and they may have tightened up some of the loose ends so that this is no longer possible, but I thought this information might help. Ever Since then i use the Post Office Registered insured if real expensive otherwise i ship express insured and have never had a problem either way(knock on wood).image

I use nothing but USPS registered mail. There is nothing tough about wrapping a box completely with gooey brown tape. No offense to anyone image

Not to pick on you, but this is part of your problem. FedEx Ground is different from standard overnight FedEx. It's cheaper, not as fast, and is transported differently than their higher priority services. I use FedEx often to and from PSA, but I pay for overnight service only. It's been mostly smooth sailing, and a lot quicker than Registered Mail (but, I agree - USPS Registered Mail seems to be bulletproof).

  • Just to really blow all of your minds, USPS priority mail is carried by FedEx Express. Since USPS seems to give you more insurance options, that is probably the way to go, but it is no more reliable.

I am a FedEx employee so typically use Priority Express to ship to PSA. I have a good employee discount which makes this a great option for me.
  • Is the Express the same as the overnight service mentioned above?
  • USPS registered has worked best for me shipping to PSA. Fed-Ex and UPS both have left packages with my neighbors. One was a card I paid $600. Thankfully I have great neighbors.

  • I dont think Fed Ex covers collectibles or Emu eggs. Per another board member, per the article he posted. Card or collectibles was mentioned befor or after Emu Eggs. Airborne left 2 new laptops out side of my front door. Luckily 2 days later they were still there when I returned.

I dont think Fed Ex covers collectibles or Emu eggs.

And yet SGC and BGS chooses Fed Ex to ship back your stuff.
I never figured that one out.

  • Rangerman, I feel for you. Here's another vote for USPS Registered when it comes to high $ items and Priority Mail on lesser submissions. Similar to Rustywilly, Fed Ex left a $ 2500 graded comic on my door step while I was away at work. Fortunately, it was still there when I got home. They also left a package on my porch that got wet. Again I was fortunate, the box was soaked but the bubble wrap inside protected my unopened box of cards. Whew !!!

I hope there's a happy ending for you and the package(s) show up soon.

    Tony,

I have worked for the Post Office for 28 years and have seen only two lost packages in that entire time when using registered mail.It happens with every shipping company, just almost never when you use registered mail.If you are shipping priority mail and insuring for a high dollar amount, the postage on the package could be a red flag as it would be a high dollar amount. Also,it is more cost effective to send high dollar cards or high amounts by registered as it is cheaper than insured mail. The Post Office has it set up that way.I hope you have a positive outcome and I would stay with registered mail from now on if your submission is above a couple of hundred dollars. The only catch to using registered mail is that the package cannot be a bubble mailer and has to have all seams taped with brown paper tape so that they can "round date"the seams.Check with your local post office on availability of paper tape or buy it at Staples or a similar store

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Fedex delivered my Psa 7 Ty Cobb card to my neighbor four doors down. My neighbor signed his own name! The card is valued over four thousand dollars. I almost had a heart attack.
  • EagleEyeKid,
I was wondering the same thing about SGC and BGS using FedEx for shipping. Anyone know if they self insure packages over $500???

I used to love FedEx ground. I still would recommend them on large/heavy box shipments, they simply are far cheaper than any USPS offering. Both times I experienced problems the package was eventually found. Both ended up taking 3-5 weeks.

There insurance will cover collectibles only up to $100. The don't tell you that as they sell you the $700 worth of coverage.

I my case I showed them my actual costs the items were around $800 and the sale was for a loss at around $600. They took mercy on me and waived the $100 rule and cut me a check for just under $400. When I talked to them they implied I should feel lucky that I got anything over $100.

Luckily after refunding my customer, the package finally found it's way to him. Unfortunately, he didn't still need all the cards and it turned $600 sale into a $200 sale. But at least the cards were found.

After five business days you have to be relentless with them. Get escalations and get them looking for it. File the claim promptly and then they will truly start looking for it.

I found out, as Sagard did, that the coverage falls to $100.00 for Fedex Ground shipments. I wonder if shippers have grounds for a class action suit for Fedex overcharging for shipping insurance or "declared value" as they call it?

  • What I got from reading that, is that baseball cards are prohibited image

<< <i>Collector's coins and stamps may not be shipped. See the Prohibited Items section >>

<< <i>Prohibited Items - You are prohibited from tendering the following items for shipment, and they will not be accepted: 1. Cash, currency, collectible stamps and coins. >>

I'm no lawyer, but if they took your money for insurance, they should be held accountable.

I may be wrong but I don't think sportscards are included in the category of "collectible stamps and coins." Although, it wouldn't surprise me if they were. image

Edited to add: I used to ship exclusively through Fedex before I found out about the $100.00 and, thankfully, I never had a problem. I still have my submissions returned to me through Fedex but that will change soon as well.
