1853 & Three Shades of Copper

Have I ever mentioned that I like copper...... image

....the farthing with yellow/lime/golden iridescence, the halfpenny still trying to be "red", and the penny draped in pure 'chocolate block' with just a wee bit of bluish-purple about the legends, just for Spinaker.

  • Hi,
    Love the farthing!
    It's your 1853/2 I think?
The finest 1853/2 I know of.
Any chance of seeing the reverse- for the
    sake of completeness.

    Thanks

Teg, yes I believe it is an 1853/2, at least there appears to be a "2" undertype. Strangely, the only other 1853 I have found is also a 3/2. The one shown here was purchased as a plain 1853. image

  • Thanks - great coin and photos.
For those who don't know, Obverse sovereign dies
were used to strike young head farthings.
In the early 1980s a sovereign over-date was
    found for 1853/2.
Colin Cooke compared the dies and in 1984 published
this variety. It is not that uncommon. The giveaway
is the curl of the two under the top left curl of the
    three.
If the "conclusive" sovereign had not been found,
the evidence on the farthing alone might not be
    enough.
