I know this against eBay procedure, but...

After losing an auction, have you been asked to buy an identical item by the seller (or someone else)?

This is almost in the same vein, but I have emailed sellers when I forgot to bid and the auction ended with no winner to see if they were going to relist and often they offer to sell it outright, apparently without going thru ebay.

It may piss off ebay but I see no real harm in it.

If it pisses off Ebay then I'm 100% for it.

I have e-mailed sellers about nine or ten times about some mid three figures/low four figures type ebay lots which didn't meet the reserve. I asked them what they wanted for it. Amazingly - never got a single response. Sort of tells me that they were just fishing for whatever reason just to see the value of the cards wre, rather than really wanting to sell because with the lots that I was extremely interested in - I never saw them relisted.

Yes and there are a couple of ways of doing it. If it's the same seller, they technically can do it the "ebay way" by giving you a 2nd chance offer. But often it's a different seller. Use caution though as there are scams of someone contacting you disguised as the original seller, trying to get you to forward them money.

My best experience with this was once I was contacted by a guy out of the blue who saw me buy a high dollar card, he had just pulled the same card (different serial number of course), and wanted to sell to me in person for 1000 I accepted the offer, met him, and I sold it for 2300 a few months later.

  • Thanks for the replies. I'm a little leary of the different seller scenario, but the one time I tried it was for a low dollar item and it turned out okay.

The part about trying to follow-up on a non-winning lot, I used to get pretty good response, sometimes even getting offers lower than the original reserve or starting price. Lately though I've usually get no response or something way above market prices. I'm wondering if ebay is monitoring emails thru the "ask seller a question" feature.

I had a stranger e-mail me and offer me the same card for which I was the underbidder on eBay. This was not the seller, and it was an offline offer. Just send me $150 by money order, he said, and I'll get the card right out to you.

It's possible he was sincere and legit, but I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. The image play is to not even reply.

I've offered cards to the underbidder before. I'd say the odds are pretty decent that he was legit. Paypal helps though.

A few months ago I had bid on four cards for my 72 set in PSA 9 from an EBAY seller (he turns out to be a member of this board). I did not win any of the auctions. The next day I got second chance offers on these cards through ebay from the seller. I was skeptical. I questioned the seller who said he had dupes of the cards. I paid him......................a few days later the seller had the same cards in PSA 9 again listed AGAIN. ......Now I am perplexed and almost annoyed thinking that I had been scammed, but this was not the case. My cards came and upon close examination i realized that the serial numbers were indeed all different. He had three copies of each card in PSA 9.

  • I bought a 1955 Clemente rookie $450.00 buy it now even though the seller had a starting bid of $425.00 Under description he writes approx. psa 5 or 6. Thru emails he did the buy it now for $450.00 I rec'd the card ok and sent straight to PSA for grading.. I got he grading results about 8 or 9 days later the card was trimmed not holdered. I contacted the dealer (deusyali) and advised of the trimming. When he got back to me he had advised ebay for the regulations in this matter and they told him thru the chat applet that if the ad had no return policy he didn't have to refund the money unless he wanted to.... I think this is a crime....All I wanted was my money back and I would return the card no harm no fould and he states he's sorry for my inconvience. Give me a break...

  • He goes by deusyali : of coarse he hasn't listed anything since this happened. Maybe if more people email him he may think twice...I doubt it.
