Were Type 1 gold dollars minted in high relief?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I read that Type 1 gold dollars were minted in high relief, and that is the reason for their relatively poor strike. I know that the Type 2's have poor strike because they were not designed well (highest points were opposite each other in the dies). Does anyone know if Type 1's are considered high reliefs (generally)?

There aren't any "low reliefs" known, so I think for the major part of the US coin collectors it doesn't matter to them, and most don't even know it (neither did Iimage). You can consider them high reliefs, but for the market, it just doesn't matter. (even not for specialised collectors, as far as they exist for type 1 gold dollars).

Part of the problem with the Type II and III gold dollars was they increased the diameter (13mm vs. 15mm) to make a larger coin but the amount of gold stayed the same requiring the use of a very thin planchet. Its hard to get a well struck coin with a very thin planchet because there is insufficient metal to fill both dies especially where two high relief design elements are opposite each other on the two dies.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I don't think of T-1 Gold Dollars as being generally relatively poorly struck.

Here's the first one I looked up, though admittedly, I had been prepared to look longer to make my pointimage:

Dennis, you nailed the grade - nicely done.

I suppose it's just an odd coincidence that the designer of the coin and the originator of thisthread have the same name.image

Mark---That looks like the no L variety. Easy to tell since several of the stars are doubled.
