Full satin-like mint luster. Well struck. Pleasing surfaces. A commission of $5, 000 was offered to the designer of the obverse of the golden dollar. Glenna Goodacre, designer of the obverse of the Sacagawea dollar, was paid her commission of $5, 000 with specially minted Sacagawea Dollars. They were delivered to her at Santa Fe, New Mexico in April of 2000 by Mint Director Phil Diehl, several other Mint personnel and two Mint guards. Goodacre had 3, 439 of the dollars certified by ICG. Numbers 2003 to 4999 were sold to the public. The remaining numbered coins were retained by Goodacre. What makes the Sacagawea dollars given different from the ones found in circulation is that they were burnished, giving them a proof-like appearance. They were also treated with an antioxidant.

    $1 – "Sacagawea" Dollar
    The 2000-P "Glenna Goodacre Presentation"
    Sacagawea Dollar History
Glenna Goodacre (a long time resident of Boulder, Colorado), acting on the advice of her friend Stephen Tebo, elected to take the design fee of $5,000 for her spectacular obverse (front) design of the new dollar, in Sacagawea Dollars. These presentation coins were specially treated; the planchets were burnished, the coins were struck from fresh dies, and the final product was treated with an anti-oxidant.

The Boulder, Colorado firm, Tebo Coin Company, negotiated on behalf of Ms. Goodacre to have all 5,000 of the coins encapsulated at ICG (a third party grading service located roughly 30 miles from Tebo). As Glenna is well known for her incredible bronze art sculptures, which are sold as individually serial numbered works from a total edition, ICG was requested to number these coins from 1 to 5,000 out of the total edition of 5,000. This seemed appropriate since these too, are wonderful works of art. Based on the long-term relationship between Glenna and Stephen, the Tebo Coin Company was given a small group of these coins to sell.

These coins are dramatically different from the normal production strikes, as they have a brilliant nearly proof-like surface, and have minimal surface contact marks. There are only 2,500 of the original 5,000 being offered to the collecting public, with the balance being retained by the Goodacre family.

  • They sell them here for $1,200
but a check of teletrade shows them selling for $300-$400.
