The song is before my time, but it was discussed in the book "A Hero's Life."
When the song was written, the country was going through quite a few difficult and painful changes. Some changes were for the better, some for the worse. They used the reference to DiMaggio to reference the heros of the past, when society was more calm and care-free.
When Joe D had his 56-game hitting streak in 1941, it essentially signaled the last era of innocence for Americans. Afterwards, WWII came and changed the world forever. Those famous lines, "Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you." are simply a cry to the days of old.
Actually, Joe D. was pretty ticked about the song at first and wanted to sue. After someone explained to him the signifiacnce of the lyrics, he was fine with it.

I have where the Beatles sing "Mrs. Robinson" but they did not invent it, that's all.

Deut, where did you buy it? I would love to hear the Beatles rendition.

October 2000 Poll

Other songs receiving votes included Peter and Gordon's World Without Love (written by the Lennon/McCartney tandem), Simon and Garfunkle's Mrs. Robinson; Live and Let Die by Wings; and several others. Look below to see full results.

It feels great being right and making someone else feel bad for making a mistake, doesn't it spammy? That feeling of pointing out to them just how wrong they are?
Grow up. People make mistakes (like you thinking the yankees making the playoffs this year...thinking $200 million would buy a championship, all that stuff).

If that aint the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.

Well in your case spammy, I do it more because I despise your trolling and spammy ways more so than calling someone out for being wrong.
True story
The Beatles did sing "Mrs. Robinson." I own it. I now know Simon and Garfunkel wrote it, but that does not mean the Beatles did not sing it as well for whatever reason. I can send it to you if you want a copy. I think I can attach it to email if you have a high storage account. I got the song from WINMX. You can find there right now. Many copies there.
Do you think someone just mislabeled the song? It sounded like the Beatles to me. I wonder how they got permission to do this.
I am so surprised Axtell came to my defense. Gemmy, I thought we were Yankee buddies. You hurt my feelings by not letting me explain. If I made a mistake, then it was based on faulty facts before me like I illustrated above (I mean, not many people got on Bush's case for invading Iraq based on faulty facts laid out before him).
I know Axtell and I disagree a lot about the Yankees and Don Mattingly, but we do great on the open forum where we battle other wannabe political pundits.

The joke in the 80's used to be that young people born after the Beatles broke up didnt know Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings . Now, apparently, its the other way around.
Still a great song, still a great reference to DiMaggio, but The Beatles never recorded or sang it, even in bootleg fashion.
<< <i>Deutcher - I can guarantee that someone mislabled the song.

<< <i>Go Braves - I actually saw the clip of that. Thats why I wrote about it in the 4th post on this thread. >>
yeah, well I do nto pay that much attention to your posts (just kidding) Did you post have the link to the actual story?
Deut, I am sorry I hurt your feelings. I was just kidding. We are still Yankee buddies. It's funny but I think I have the same political views as Axtey after reading his posts, but I think he would argue with me about that too. LOL
I think someone mislabeled the "Mrs Robinson" song on WINMX as a joke. A cruel joke indeed.

Probably not so much a joke as they just didn't know.
