What card was your biggest casualty?

What big name card did you drop, bend, corner ding, edge slide, spill coffee on, (get the picture?)?

I am ont talking about putting a 52 Mick in your spokes, but something you have done as a collector.

I was breaking out a 1961 Fleer Jack Kemp, that for some stupid reason I submitted to Pro in 2000. This baby was sweet! PRO graded it 9.5(not that holds any water). Pro cases are really tough to crack and this thing snapped in half and gouged the card.

I was pissed.

Do you have any stories?

  • Funny you mention it. Just before the last chicago show a couple weeks ago I was cracking a 38 goudey that simply looked too good to be a 5. no perceptable wrinkle through the plastic anywhere. I'm cracking it around slowly, then... CRACK!! I nearly stabbed myself when I hit a soft spot in the seal and just nicked the edge enough to lift a little speck off the border. thank god it was just a common, but i'll probably still lose prob $60 on it.

thank god the card did have a little wrinkle on it (from the factory i'm sure) or I would have been pissing myself even more than I already was.

No more cracking cases at 2AM for me!!

Cracked a SGC 6 '66 Koufax, turned it into a 2 by letting the screwdriver slip into the border.
The proceeded to do almost the same thing to a '16 Tango Eggs Bescher, turning a 7 into a 5.
Finally got smart and read Brucemo's website about cracking holders.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Mine was thanks to the USPS and a bad seller shipping job......few years back won 2 sweeeeet 33 Goudey cards a Micky Cochrane and Ted Lyons they were raw and NM+ and I got them for a great price. Seller puts them raw in an envelope with some card board pieces wrapped in newspaper....no penny sleve.....no top loader. I get the package open it up...first card Lyons in great shape (thank you Lord)....second card Cochrane bent in 2 places like a one penny common!!! I was sick, took 5 months to get my money back from USPS (shipment was insured at least). This was little comfort as the card was truly rare in the shape and they made me turn the card in to get the insurance payment so I never saw it again. Got the Lyons graded by PSA and it came back a 7...and the Cochrane was at least as nice, still trying to fill the hole in my set to this day.
