It's probably the one that was given to the security guard and they already
    have an official opinion.

Rob, it was handled by the owner and showed to people as a curiosity. It was graded perfectly!

Were Stellas ever monitized? The article says they were handed out to congress. Same deal, isn't it?

    That is one Kewl coin.

How long will it stay in the ICG holder before it gets crossed over to NGC or PCGS?imageimage

It will be interesting to see how much this goes for. There was a long thread on the
topic just recently and I suspect a lot of the guesses were way low.

This is a cool coin and sure to excite interest in the 1974 small and large date coins. imagehere's the link, I hope.

This coin will not bring one bit of interest to 1974 copper cents.

The dies were reworked in 1974 in order to facilitate the coining of aluminum
issues. For some reason these different varieties just never really caught on
with collectors. They suffer from being fairly common yet still don't appear in
the mint sets. While all are common they are not common in high grades. It
seems improbable that the cause of the varieties can get national attention
while the results continue to be almost completely ignored and unrecognized.

The feds have known of the existence of this coin for at least twenty years and have
    made no move on it.

    We'll see.

With the global war on terrorism, do you really think the feds are concerned with a small aluminum coin? I sure doubt it.

    hey Lee and Tom

what's the "spelling error" on the slab that you're wetting your pants about??image if you look at the CW article it clearly shows that the coin was submitted by the Toven family. i assume you're thinking it should read Token Specimen but it's correct as printed----i think.

we've discussed this coin before as Ben said, back when he posted about it at a Baltimore or Michael Dixon sponsored show. it's probably more interesting with the intrigue surrounding it associated with the IRS and Secret Service than just as a holdered coin. i'd think it would be more valuable as a Pattern than as a Lincoln Cent to a specialized collector.

You bunch of freakin' kool-aid drinkers. This is one of the more important numismatic items to hit the open market in a long time, and all you kvetch about are spelling errors on a web site (which I believe have since been corrected). If this had been sent to PCGS, you'd all be crowing about how awesome it is and how wonderful HRH and PCGS are. Suck it up, fellas -- the other guy got this one.

I wonder if Cammie got his hot little hands on this. Maybe he'll post a "story behind the story" for us. Probably not, tho' -- I imagine there's still a lot of secrecy around it.

    Probably.

But my estimate of value assumes that it gets the attention of at least one of the many very avid
and well-heeled Lincoln collectors. I still think the price could surprise.

Even a type collector could get interested.

    Neat coin and story.

The opposition to aluminum cents by vending machine owners is laughable. When was the last time you put a penny in a vending machine?

Most vending machines today take dollar bills. I don't want to hear about those companies and how they dictate our coinage anymore. Just rediculous.
