Pixel counters and Psa fans, what is centering for a PSA 7?

Is this 70/30?

  • slight tilt - at it's worst point before the blue looks 75.5/24.5 with pixel counting.
  • Read "The importance of eye appeal and subjectivity in grading" in the PSA Grading Standards in SMR. I think this sheds some light on why they gave it a seven. I think there is some history of liberal centering tolerance with white/yellow background 55's. Card still looks like it lacks eye appeal with that centering in this instance though.

  • The fact that the background color on this issue is yellow explains quite a bit when discussing eye-appeal... the yellow blending more or less into the white diminishes the contrast that the "true" centering would suggest. Looks like the folks over at PSA would have given this an 8 had the centering been a bit better or even .5 from "strict" 8 centering tolerances.

A very nice card whatever the grade, I wish I had a Koufax graded 7 with the same centering...
  • Perhaps it would have been a 9OC but the submitter asked for NQ's? Just a thought as I could be way off image.

  • Using a pixel ruler I get 78/22 left to right and 47/53 top to bottom. I just used the inserted picture without enlarging it. With the left to right centering off the best this card should grade is PSA 6.
